Aux halogen lights fogging....
« on: October 29, 2007, 07:00:28 PM »

Has anyone had any problems with the halogen sealed beams fogging up inside? Two brand new ones fogged up as soon as they were powered up last night. So, what, what? Makes me mad to spend so much for so little!   :smilie_daumenneg:

SE...after the lights had time to heat up the inside, did the moisture not get out?

Not as of this AM, but too cold (36 degrees) to ride. If that is a possibility, then they are not sealed beams?

I've not seen those particular lights, but on my Ultra, the bulb inserts from the rear with a twist lock motion, so it would be possible for some moisture to intrude under the right circumstances, and might not become apparent until the temp changed and the moisture condensed.

They might have been assembled in a beach shack in China... ;)

You think that's bad, my $500 H-D HID headlight fogged up within the first few months I got it.  Looks like chit at night, but hasn't affected performance.  Can't really tell it's there during the daylight, so I live with it. :-\

My headlight and passing lamps are starting to get cloudy.  In the past, I've lived with it until it gets cold.....which is usually when most of us do mods and major maintenance anyway.  Didn't have the challenge with passing lamps on the 02 Ultra, since those were bulbs, but as for the headlight assembly, I pull it out, take the bulb out, fill it with warm, soapy water, cram a wet rag inside, shake the chit out of it, remove the rag, rinse it GOOD with HOT water, and let it dry for a few days.  Put it all back together, and it looks crystal clear.....better than new.  Good for another year. Since Thump's passing lamps are assemblies, I'll do the same to them.

Henry, you'll likely not have to contend with that this year.  All those g's Thumper is pulling now will suck the chit right out of the housings.

Hmmmmm.  Good point, Don.  I'll need to ride a little more to prove out that theory.   :P

Now they're clear. Checked this morning and this afternoon. These are sealed beams; the black tipped halogen bulb will not remove for replacement and they plug in to the harness. HD #68348-05. I guess the Chinese baby breath is gone. Sand too.

I like the idea of being able to wash them out though.

Thanks,

I just took a look at the HD website, and it says:

Designed to complement the Smooth Headlamp with Reflector Optics found on '05-later Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, these Clear Lens Auxiliary Lamps feature a Vertical Optics reflector and a plug-in replaceable bulb.

I'm running what looks like the same lamps on my '07 SERK, except I have replaced the original bulbs 27.5 (?) watt bulbs with 50 or 55 watt bulbs. They make a HUGE difference at night.  :bananarock: But the downside is that they fog up the lenses even quicker than the stock bulbs.  :( When they get too foggy for me I take them apart and rinse them out with a cap full of isopropyl alcohol, then dry them thoroughly with compressed air before reassembling them. I rinse the reflector as well as the lens. They look like new for a few weeks after that...  :mango:

Hope this helps!  8)
