I scuba now & its like being inside the tank, but bigger.  ;D

Nothing is better than the real thing and seeing them in their habitat.  Not a diver but have snorkled some in Hawaii..  When you dive, you're in the tank    :).  Wouldn't mind trying diving, but I would probably use all the air up on the way down   :-\  .

I was snorkeling and decided to try scuba a few years ago.  I do tend to use a lot of air, but I need to breathe, dammit.  ;D

In Hawaii we changed a planned dive trip to a snorkel trip off Molokini.  Had a GREAT time - lots of turtles.

I miss keeping aquariums at times.  Fish are very relaxing as long as they are swimming and not floating upside down.  :(

I can't believe you just said that! I was reading through this topic and just said to a friend here at work the exact same thing. He said we were very lucky, he didn't have any money for fish so he switched back and forth from the ant races to the broadcast test signal (indian)on a old TV for entertainment. Awe, those were the days. (Thank God we made it through them)

Must be something about aquariums and being stoned.  The cichlids were really big on rock moving - 1 rock at a time.  Never knew exactly why they did that, but it was hours and hours and hours of entertainment.  Saw some dolphins this weekend - not related to the topic, but considering the thread hijack, figured dolphins belonged in here somewhere.   :huepfenjump3:

I've seen Dolphins too, but we won't discuss what state of conciousness I was in at the time... ;) ;D

The Cichlids, particularly the African Rift Valley species, are very territorial.  I used to design the tanks very naturally, giving all of the fish a little ledge or cave of their own.  They are the Terriers of the fish world...fiesty little guys.  I actually used to breed some of them, back before they became so commonplace.  All the mouthbrooders are particularly fun to watch.  A lot of the rock/gravel moving is related to spawning activity, even if they aren't spawning.

Years ago my brother and I kept freshwater tanks, two 55-gallon (very large clown knife, jack dempseys in one, smaller fish in the other), a 30-gallon deep (red piranha which he traded for a hampster when I was at college), two 10-gallon ones of feeder goldfish for the big fishies.

Molokini is great, am going back in April.

Cichlids........and they are entertaining to watch, especially after a few  :drink: VERY territorial and they will move gravel all over the place.....had some mouth brooders and ended up (accidently) with a whole tank full of babies. They eat their own and before I got the tank cleared out they had quite a feast. Electric blue are mellow and beautiful in the light. Tank maintenence is a monthly chore, but overall cheap entertainment  :2vrolijk_21:

i had a 135 gallon salt water tank many years ago. When it was up and running, it was great. Damn things are such delicate ecosystems. one of the fish got some disease and just about all the fish died. i had lion fish, triggers and even a nerf shark.  one time i got some sea horses which cost like $15 each. i acclimated them and then put them in the tank. Well, that was a really dumb idea. The lion fish saw the seahorses from across the tank and started marching toward them.  It was one of the those moments when everything happened in slow motion. i couldn't seem to get back to the tank in time and the lion fish gulped them down in one swallow.  That was a $30 mistake!!

Horny cichlids moving rocks........ never knew why until now.  Maybe that explains why my neighbor mows when the yard doesn't need it, and edges the grass when it doesn't need it, and... nevermind.  ;D

My cichlids always ate the babies before I got them out, too.  Fun fish - kinda mean at times.

I kept several tanks but quit when the kids were semi-little.

Too much trouble since I was traveling so much.  Had an outside goldfish/guppy "feeder" pond at the time that I used to keep the bass, sunfish, oscar, or whatever else I had indoors that liked live food.

I scuba now & its like being inside the tank, but bigger.  ;D

It's the only way to go!  After you spend some time on the reefs with these awesome critters, you'll never want to hold them captive.  I like to stare into a nice marine tank and look at the critters as well, but almost always, you will notice that the colors are just off a bit due to water conditions being less than perfect.  It is really hard to enjoy looking at fish that are ill!  I have seen some really good marine tanks, but it takes a lot of money and time to keep them up.  Basically, it is a game to see how long you can keep your fish alive.  Take up SCUBA and really enjoy looking at the critters.  But, consider this, SCUBA diving is an addiction.....Kind of like chrome!

Picture of the coral after cleaning.  Clown trigger, naso tang, yellow tang, and Nemo and Merlin.  They don't pose real well.
