Bolting everything back together and starting to torque the comp nut. Got to 105lbs and bam....the fu_king thing broke

What broke? Am I looking at the picture correct, did the nut shear in half ie. top and bottom half? If so did it damage the threads or splines on the crank?

You are looking at a good nut on the right and the broken one on the left

SUCKS huh

Ahh yeah. :-X

Had one while away on a trip come loose on an open belt drive and beat the crap out of the splines. Since I was away I couldn't do a thing about it. I found a local garage and paid the man to use his welder. I welded the nut to the shaft and to the pulley. It got me home! Needless to say I had to replace the shaft. :o ;D

Brian, this just plain sucks!

Looking at the area on the nut and shaft where it broke does it look like it was stressed showing a previous crack. If the break is clean it will have a dull look totally thru the break, if it was stressed from fatigue it will have some shiny spots in the area where the metal had broken and was moving. If it was previously stressed it would have finished the break after you torqued it.

Now I would wonder if it was stressed....if the torque of your build caused this or the chain getting too tight. Or maybe even a combination of the two.

Did you say you were filling that crankcase with Crown Royal?

Roy, it looks as if it were already stressed.

Guess the domino affect is applying more that I ..........really need at this point.

Well I guess Crown in the engine is better than Syn 3 :huepfenlol2:

I just hope you can get the remaining broken piece out without a tear down unless you really want to get the cases refinished now.  Your riding season is probably a lot longer than ours and might be a factor.  How is Kathy taking all of this?  You may be riding on the back again.   :)

Well the cases had to be split.  Scott and I removed the engine and trans,  Lee at the machine shop has the left half of the case with the flywheel still in it. He will machine the comp sleve off and then all should be ok :2vrolijk_21:

Will then take the cases and cylinders to the powder coater on Sat so he can make things look new again.

Kind of glad that things had to come apart. Found a few more things that were bad
there was a screw that attaches the throttle body to the intake missing, so air leak there
there were 2 broken wires in the harness   1 on the air intake temp sensor
1 on the rear cylinder injector
the cam cover was worn through where the Rhinehart true duals rubbbed.  Check to make sure yours don't touch
the D & D Fat Cats that are on there now, have a broken bracket where they attach to the trans.
all the seals on the transmission leaked
the shaft sleve on the transmission output shaft had slid inward on the shaft

So the domino affect continues........................hell it's only money......right :coolblue:
