Anyone added the Kuryakyn Saddle Shields
« on: November 06, 2007, 03:38:49 PM »

Was wondering if anyone on the forum has added the Kuryakyn Saddle Heat shields.  I bought some and have had some issues with the side covers holding the bottom mount.  They look cool, and supposedly deflect the heat from your thighs, but won't know unless I can figure out how to install better.  Appreciate any input.

I bought a pair and after I read they wanted me to glue a longer peg in the bottom of the cover i returned it... Look in the box there should be a kit to glue the longer pegs to attach the side covers...

I've got them on my bike and they work well to keep the heat off your thigh. They mount in the existing side cover with nothing else to add. I'm not sure what you are adding to them.

I glued the longer pegs in & they still popped off periodically so I made some smaller grommet holes where the sidecovers popp into. Not an issue anymore & they definitely helped out in Daytona last month!

I went with these http://www.rjsoriginals.com/   IMO they look better, had no problem putting them on and didn't have to modify anything.

I also went with the RJS Originals. They are bendable so you can shape them to fit where you need them to, they do look like an extension of the seat, and they do work on keeping the heat off of you thigh - especially on the left side where the cross over pipe is. I would recommend them.

I installed the HD mid-frame heat deflectors and they work great...no mods necessary they just bolt on...however, I would recommend cutting down an allen wrench to tighten the top screw on the right side.  The rocker cover gets in the way to tighten it properly with a "normal" length allen wrench, but once it was cut down, no problems.

Muffman,

Would it be possible to post pics of the smaller grommets you made/bought?  I couldn't get the extensions to stay in the side cover.  The glue they provided didn't work, and when I called Kuryakyn they said just go buy some other kind of glue. :confused5:  I like your idea especially if I don't have to modify my side covers.  Thanks for your help

Jim,

Did you use another type of glue to glue in the pin extenders?  How about any problems with the side cover popping back out of the grommet?  I'm hoping I can make them work.  Thanks

MUFFMAN FROM CANADA HERE. I'LL TRY TO GET PICTURES LOADED. HAVEN'T TRIED YET. WHAT I DID DO WAS BUY ONE SIZE SMALLER GROMMET SHAVE A LITTLE MORE OFF & GLUED INSIDE EXISTING HOLE. FITS SO SNUG IT ACTUALLY TAKES A TUG TO REMOVE. MY BROTHER-IN LAW HAS SINCE DONE HIS WITH NO ISSUES.

I read somewhere that these things actually increase the running temps. due to holding heat in. Any comment?

I like the looks of these.  Anybody interested in a group buy?  Maybe one of you could become a dealer / distributor.  $140 is a little steep for me for heat shields, but closer to $100 and I'm in.

I have seen no raise in temp whatsoever after installing rj's, after I ordered my set he called me to verify info. and I ended up talking to him for about a half hour. He is a he// of a nice guy and has been making these deflectors himself for over 10 yrs. If you go to his site and contact him he will answer any questions you have, he makes these himself and does not outsource for any materials. 100% American materials and it really looks like its OEM. I have honestly had several people comment wow they actually put heat deflectors stock on the 08's, and I guess HD gives you deflectors when you pay 40k. Not sure if he'll do a deal on a group buy, but its worth the price and who knows give him a call and ask.

That seems very pricey for heat deflectors, unless you're looking for ones with "bling".  HD's version, part number 58022-07A, goes for $64.95 (I got them for $52.00 at Chicago Harley), and they look great and work great.  Have not noticed any increase in operating temp, but definitely a lot less heat on the legs.
