Cigar Aficionado??
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:37:50 AM »

I just received a box of "Hemingway" cigars. On the box it has a label that says "Signature Reserva / Especial". This was a gift and I know absolutely nothing of cigars. The cigars also came with a humidor that has a hygrometer and a thing to put distilled water in. (pictured below)
Since I know there are several cigar aficionados here, I need a little help. At what level should the hygrometer be kept on and do I just pour the distilled water in the other little round thingamabob? Also, are these good cigars?
Thanks for any information you could provide.

I'm sure someone will jump in and give you specifics about what you have, but I've used Cigar Aficionado as a resource before.

You will need to send them to me right away!   :P

Those are very nice smokes.

Use distilled water in the thingy...There are better thingies available, look for a clear tube with cyrstals in it ..they just work better than the round thingy.

Wipe the inside of the humidor with more distilled water, not soaking but wetted.

You can calibrate the hygrometer by wetting some salt until damp (not dissolving it), place it and the hygrometer in a ziplock type bag...it should read ~ %70 RH, if not adjust it with the little screw.

Put the wetted thingy into the wetted humidor and let it stand overnight.  The smokes are fine in the box they came in for now, just don't heat them.

Observe the humidity in the humidor and if between 65-75, you can put the sticks in, leave them in the cello wrappers though.  The less they are pawed the better.

Enjoy!

I can't believe it.  Those are my favorite cigars! I smoke the Hemmingway Classics, very similar to what you posted.  Terrific cigar, you have good taste... :bananarock:

BTW, Miker that was good advice on preserving the cigars and is exactly how I do my humidor.  The distilled water is important.

I've been chewing for 20+ years, all these years Kathy just thought she sucked at keeping plants alive in the house, she had no idea I've been spitting in them whenever she wasn't looking. So this vice might be a welcome alternative. ;D

I don't get any betther than my Swisher Sweets of Pom Pom cherries. I'd either lose that expensive box or end up sitting on it.

This is my Humidor I made from a Wine Cooler purchased at Target. Instead of going through the trouble of lining the cooler with Spanish cedar, I found a glass door humidor that would slide in it. After getting my humidor ready and then filling it, I went by Radio Shack and bought one of those wireless temp/humidity readers you can put outside and placed it in the bottom of the Humidor itself. The base unit sits a few feet away on my dresser. Now all I have to do is look at the bas unit and I get my RH and Temp readings from inside the humidor without having to open it and I can still see into it. I did this because my smoke were getting too warm in the summer time here in Florida. Now it stays around 69/70 year round. Sorry if this was a  :jack: post!!

I lined the inside of my wine fridge with cedar, it wasn't too bad to do, just tap the boards in, they were only 5/16.

I do need a bigger one, I like to keep 10-20 boxes at home.  Mind you, I have have lockers at 2 stores that I hang around in too.  Great for snaggin sales.

Mark, you will not like those cigars.  I repeat you will not like them.  I am on my way over right now to get them and properly dispose of them for you. :2vrolijk_21:
