Never lie to a police officer
« on: December 03, 2007, 09:27:57 PM »

Friday I was towing the Donzi with the F-350 to a tournament in Va Beach Va. There is an Expressway in Chesapeake, and I decided to not take it and fill up the boat with fuel at a gas station on Hwy 168. After filling up, I pulled back on 168 and accelerated hard to get up to 55 mph.
At 35mph I noticed a little white car coming up on my 6 very fast. Next thing I notice is the little white car passing me in the turn lane. As soon as she passed me, by now I am doing 50 mph, she slams on the brakes. Now the truck and boat weigh over 22,000 lbs and her Toyota Corolla weighs what....3500 lbs.....this is not going to be pretty. If you have ever slammed on the brakes while towing a large load, it doesn't stop real quick. I was on the brakes so hard that the truck was actually bouncing.
At this point all I could see was the top of her car. I knew that I was going to kill anyone in that car. For some unknown reason that I can't explain, I only hit her so lightly that it didn't even scuff the paint off her bumper. The girl gets out of her car and walks with athourity to read the  license plate on the rear of my truck. As she walks past my window she yells out my plate number. Charlie, who was riding with me says now that girl has a problem.
Now I since I have pulled  off the road behind the Corolla and call 911......in which I was put on hold for over 5 minutes. REALLY!!!  now I tell the dispatcher what happened and she sent out a patrol car. When the 2 officers arrive I tell them what happened. Then they go up to the girls car and talk to her for a few moments.
I tell Charlie,"since I nailed her in the ass, I am going to get f*cked". Not looking good for the home team. ha ha
The police officers walk back up to the truck and hand me an accident report. The one officer tells me that the girl admitted to illegally passing me and she said " an amimal ran out in front of her is why she hit the brakes".Well the officer informed me that in Va if you hit the brakes because of an animal, then you are not in control of your vehicle anymore, and are now CARELESS AND RECKLESS DRIVING. Any accident that occours while C&RD is your fault. Animals in Va do not constitute a danger to vehicles and you should just hit them.
Now Charlie and I never saw any animal and told the officer this. He said that he believed that the girl was lying but it worked out in my favor and don't worry about it. He then proceded to the girls car and handed her a Careless and Reckless Driving ticket. Oh man if I had my video camera, sparks were flying. After a few moments they come back to my truck and say that I can pull out behind her.  I asked if I could pull out first, I didn't want to be behind her again, so they let a few cars go between us when they let traffic go.

Morral of this is....never tell an officer that you were trying to not hit an animal, just tell the truth.....I want the insurance money :2vrolijk_21: ha ha

actually this is a true story

And the CA version is....  My son was travelling down a raod that runs through the foothills between Brentwood & Livermore, Vasco Rd.  He was 17 years old and had several dogs, he thought, Coyotes actually, run out in front of him.  He was travelling 50+ locked up the brakes the Jeep spun around, slid to the side of the road and hit the curb along the road, gently rolled over onto its side.

CHP came, took an accident report & told him, next time hit them because even if it causes you to have an accident it isn't chargeable to your insurance.  Act of God if an animal causes it & you hit them.  No animal, no freebee.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Hogasm,
I'm sure glad eveything turned out OK on your end, with the afore mentioned endeavor, you experienced with an obivious "crack-head", at the controls of that Toyota.  Which gives me the forethought of your future defense, should you ever need it, when you are stopped by the "Man", for pullin' "Wheelies", as you so blantantly displayed in the parking lot of Crystal River Harley-Davidson this past Spring, you could simply say, "I was tryin' to jump over that Armadillo, man, to keep from crashin!"  :huepfenlol2: Lookin' forward to seein' you in Daytona, this Spring.  Later--HUBBARD

Brian,  not sure how you do it, but you do seem to end up in the most interesting of driving positions.  So glad to hear how this one turned out.  What a mess it could have been.  Like you, I always thought that if you hit someone, you were at fault.  Good one keeping it all on the road.  What a mess it could have been.

That's what happened, he hit her like the animal she was!  Good story.  I'm glad it worked out for you.  What was the real reason for the sudden braking?  Was she PO'ed because you were accellerating while she was passing you?

Was she PO'ed because you were accelerating while she was passing you?

No doubt Brian was pulling that fine Donzi with a diesel F350, in which case he was leaving her in lets say, maybe a little cloud of smoke?

Might have done it once or twice myself, sometimes you can't even see the car behind you :2vrolijk_21:

Now that diesel will accelerate pretty quick, and will leave a large cloud of smoke :coolblue:  Charlie thinks she needed drug money, and that is why she hit the brakes like she did.

I believe I have gotten  out of more chit by just telling the truth than trying to embellish it somewhat. :2vrolijk_21:

What about the tournament. :nixweiss:

The tournament.....the Chesapeake Bay was 6-8 foot seas with a north wind at 29 kts. Ran from Little Creek to the mouth of the Potomac River. About 65 miles. Running 40 kts in that was brutal, and I stopped short of where I wanted to go, which was buoy 72B, by 6 miles. The seas won. Caught at least 10 Stripers but the largest was 24 lbs.
Sunday the seas were 2-4 foot with a south 10-15 kts. Ran 50 mph to the same place and ended up catching a 47.5 lb striper, which would have won the tournament.......but 45 miles from the weigh in the lower coil on the starboard motor shorted out, caught fire and made the motor cut off.
With 1 motor the Donzi will only make 8 kts. Since we had 2 hours to make it back for weigh in....we never would have made it. We putted into Deltaville and after some great competitors lining up rides back to Little Creek for us, we finally made it back home around 1:30 am.
If it weren't for bad luck, I would have no luck at all.
Oh yea.....$13,000 for first place :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

Brian

You clearly have much more experience with boats than me. (not enough water here for mine)
I have heard horror stories about people being out and having motor problems and never making it back.
Just glad you did!

Just taking up room in the attached garage.
Waiting on spring and water (rain)
It's ready, I just don't like cold water. (no matter how shallow it is)

This is probably a dumb question but (never stopped me before) will the GPS record speed on the boat?
Last time I took it out the speedo was bouncing between 80 and 100.

sorry Brian  :jack:

Speaking of which, how's that little banana of your's?

Asked that way in any other forum and you may turn a few heads (no pun intended) but in this forum and in this thread I certainly hope you are asking about Chip's  :bananarock: drag boat and not the other  :bananarock: he will soon have.  :huepfenlol2:

By the way, sure gad it turned out in your favor Brian.
