Runs Hot in 76 degree weather.
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:01:46 AM »

OK, I was going to try and live with my third SE Ultra without touching the fuel delivery.  I have just over 420 miles on the Coppertop including riding about four hours yesterday in North Carolina in and out of traffic in 76 degree beautiful weather. My legs are still burning. The previous rides were put on in fifty degree weather and I experienced no heat problems.  Thought that I was safe. I honestly beleive that this 08 runs hotter than the 07 did bone stock.

I have no experience with a SERT but only Power Commanders in the past.  What should I pay for the SERT installed when I get my 1000 miles service?  Does it void warranty?  I have an exteneded five year on top of the two.

Thanks for the info.

I live in So Cal and have done several things for the engine heat.

First, I installed Harley's air deflectors, part number 58022-07A.  The '08 frame has hex holes already punched in the frame for the expansion nuts that come with the kit.

Next I added the fuel enhancing pig tails from Night Rider.  They plug in-line at each O2 sensor to trick the ECM into thinking it's putting out 14.6AFR when it's actually 14.2.  My head temp dropped 20 degrees.  It's not detectable by the ECM or Harley so no warranty issues. http://www.nightrider.com/parts/catalog00.htm.  The SERT will void the warranty if Harley feels that the failure is tune related.  It happened to a friend of mine.

Lastly, I installed the LeNale Engineering cooling fan which works great for traffic situations.

Lenale works thru Ebay which worked fine for me.

Jim,

I got mine out for the first time on Saturday and put about 240 miles on it.  I was pleasantly surprised that the engine didn't seem to be any hotter than the other bikes I've had with before removing the crossover.  I have the SERT on both the 05 and 06 and have never had any problems engine wise.  As long as you have a good relationship with your dealer, buy it from him and have his guy tune it, I don't think you'll have any warranty issues but ask to be sure.  I went ahead and bought one for the 08 and my dealer told me since I bought it at the same time I bought the bike that it would be covered under the full warranty including the extended.  I think the SERT's are in the $450 range.

Stekat, I have the exact same experience with our bike, and we live within 10 miles of each other, so our weather is identical.  Even yesterday, we went up to Ojai for breakfast.  It was between 55-60 degrees on hwy 150.  The temp on the engine was between 220-230 degrees.  On the warmer days I have seen 260 degrees.

I also want to keep the bike stock and compliant with California EPA, and I want it quiet so we can enjoy the XM radio (which is great!).  And I don't want a ticket for loud pipes when we go to Malibu and other places around LA.

I just installed the same Air Deflectors.  That was an interesting installation.  Especially the right side just behind the head - the clearance forced me to use a ball head hex and a small "L" shaped hex to tighten it down.  I can't understand how HD expects you to use a torque wrench in those locations.  I did manage to tighten the screws down, and with the lock washers it should be okay.

I like what you did with the fan and the Night Rider thing - I will check it out.  I wonder if getting away with the SYN3 will help cool her down a bit as well.  I just don't want to start playing around with pipes, SERTS, PC's and Dyno tunes.  We spent enough money, enough is enough...

D...I'd get away from the Syn3, even if it didn't do anything to the oil temps.  You've got a 35K bike and I'll bet you want nothing but the best products in her for lubrication...Syn3 is CLEARLY not the best.  Amsoil or Mobil 1 Vtwin...you will see some difference in oil temps, but more importantly, you'll know it's getting the best in oil and temp protection.

Thanks for the info. Going to try the pigtails.  Just ordered and look forward to seeing if they help my situation.  If not, not a huge investment.  Will also do the heat deflector.  Have air horns so can't use the fan.

I agree, I used the 20-50 V Twin Amsoil on my last bike.  I only have around 500 miles on mine and I figure I'll drop the SYN3 at the first service with the Amsoil in the case and drive, 75-90 Shock in the tranny. Anyone consider the 90-140 Heavy duty in the tranny?  Or is that too much?

Deucedog, on the deflectors, since the right top bolt is so close to the head and it doesn't show anyway, I used a hex and a box wrench, it made it easy.

I'm happy with the pigtails even though it's not the way I'd tune the bike if I had my "druthers".  I've tuned many bikes using the RT, it's just Harley's attitude that takes the fun out.

I use Amsoil in the engine and primary (after 1500 mi) and Red Line Shock Proof Heavy in the trans.  I've used this combo for a long time on my other bikes and I'm happy with it.

I thought about the Hex head and I asked myself why on earth they spec'd button head screws - that was just plain poor engineering and stupid.  I guess its part of that Harley attitude (but we're not allowed to bash HD, even though they were stupid about this one  ::):-X

Good recommendation on the oils.  I was buying my Amsoil from George Douglas (I think).  Is the Redline Heavy available locally?  And do you notice any smoother shifting?  Thanks...

I've never seen this Redline stuff, but I haven't looked for it either.  The first time I heard of it was here, and from what I've read, it appears to be great stuff.........however..........I am of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality."  I've been using Bel-Ray 85W140 in my transmissions since 2004, and I love the stuff.  Smooth shifting, and zero "clunk."  It smells terrible, but tradeoffs occur in the best made plans.

I tried that Redline stuff in my 07 and could tell no difference than my Mobile 1.

Deucedog,
Since you're local, you can get it at "County Line Choppers" on Easy St; or you can get it at "PAW" over the hill.  They just moved and I think they're at Nordoff and Woodly now.  You might call them first to confirm the location.  I find the trans to shift smoother and runs a little quieter.  For your info, Baker transmissions specs it out for use in their products.

I live in Florida so I get to ride alot. I have Rinehart exhaust air cleaner and a Large cam installed. My bike never runs over 230 and I think the reason is Amsoil and getting the stock crap off the bike. I tried Syn 3 and the bike ran 250
and I removed it the next day, I know have 18,000 miles on my 2007 Ultra and have a rear cylinder oil leak like everyone else.
