New Gasket?
« on: December 20, 2007, 10:46:21 AM »

I was on another forum, talking with a guy about the 110 issues...his bike is now in the shop for it's first fix.  He reports the following:

I actually saw my old and new cylinders the other day. You could feel the lip of the sleeve above the bore of the casting of the cylinder. It moved up and must have destroyed the gasket and thus the leak. I was told today by a mechanic that it was probably a bad run on the cylinders.... we will see. The new gaskets have what looks like metal at the diameter of the sleeve - not sure of the function of that - again we will see. The most info I could get out of the tech about my tranny was that there were bad bearings he did not elaborate when asked which ones????

Didn't know about the transmission bearing...has anyone else had this problem?  This guy lives in California...he also filled a formal complaint with the MOCO...they asked what it would take to make him happy, since he told them he was considering the Lemon Law.  At least this is some indication that the MOCO is very much aware of the problem and is attempting damage control.

I told him they should give him a free 7 year warranty...

But, it does sound like a new style gasket is being tried?

Have read with some interest (and amusement) about strong anticipation of some latest change to the gasket.  At the same time also reading of cylinder liners moving.

C'mon guys. If the liner actually starts to move can you imagine the gasket it would take to hold it in place (he says facetiously)?

Forget about it all if the liners continue to move.  If they can't get a handle on that, you're all f'd.  Hopefully, that is a vendor issue that can be resolved.

But, the new gasket may help with the oil weeping, and provide a bit better seal in that thin area between the bore and the oil return passage... :nixweiss:

I don't think the "Bad batch of jugs" argument hods any more water. That was OK once, but that's it. If they still can't control the liners then it's a bad design of jugs.

On the twin cam 88s you just bored the cylinders 1/8" to get it to 95 cubes.  Are the jugs on the 110s just bored out 96 inchers?  Or are they a different part?  If they are just bored out, why don't you hear of liners slipping on the 96ers?

It is my understanding that the 110s are different cylinders - not just bored out 96s.  I think (just mho) that some 'genius' vendor tried something different (who knows what) that did not work or else the process is just not capable and cannot consistently make good cylinders.  In any case they need to re-engineer this cylinder 'cause no head gasket will hold if the sleeve moves.  And, they DEFINITELY are moving.

The jugs for a 96 to 103 conversion are like the 88 to 95 in. The 110's are 4" bore cylinders, with larger spigot holes in the cases for them.

Maybe the "fix" is for the MoCo to get a different cylinder and do a recall. :confused5:

Unless it is a safety related matter Harley won't do a recall. They may do some other type of program for the affected bikes, but a mandatory recall is probably not going to happen.
