Re: Anyone replace dash Air Gauge and installed Oil Temp Gauge?

Here is a thread with a lot of information on what you may be looking for - Spun Aluminum Oil Temp Gaugue. Unfortunately it's 21 pages long and some of the pictures/text may be missing from forum software upgrade.

That thread was unfortunate and ridiculously uninformative, but I appreciate the reference.  When they do discuss the actual installation variations of the gauge and sending unit placement (which is rare for a 21 page thread), you are right, most of the photos are gone.  90% of the thread was off topic conversation and dissatisfaction with appearance of the gauge.  How sad.
As I remember that was the biggest complaint w/the gauge... how it didn't match the other gauges already out by the MoCo, and other complaint was how they (MoCo) suggested the sensor be mounted. The summary by Twolane, and the install photo by Jim should get what you want accomplished. :2vrolijk_21:

I was mostley ok with the looks of Oil Temp gauge as how it looks in the dash with the other gauges, it's miising the black needle stops at both ends of the gauage, but is almost identical otherwise. I dont tnink it is really noticable unless you are looking for it. I think using the 90 degree fitting at the oil pan is close enough to the rest of the oil in the pan to get a good reading after engine oil has come up to temperature.

ps; i agree that some of the post in some threads get way off topic and is frustrating when tring to do research. Just my opinion.

Not sure how the comments about the gauge's appearance vis-a-vis the factory gauges could be considered off topic in a thread titled " Spun Aluminum Oil Temp Gaugue?" :nixweiss: :confused5:

Still not quite on back on tilt from reading in the database error thread; then just read this and got pushed right back over the edge  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

I'm really going to try to get back on an even keel here.  It'll be hard though.

I'd trade Brian's bike for a gauge that completely matched.

Ok, sorry.  I've not gone back to look at that old thread.  But I'm sure I remember it being wholly and completely normal.  In other words it dropped on the topic occasionally and repetitively while also going "Further" (all proper citations to Ken Kesey acknowledged as per new site disclaimer requirements).

The McEwan gauge that started it all wasn't a close match at all.  The Harley gauge was closer; but initially there were at least three different iterations of it.  All with subtle differences all under the same part number.  That seemed to resolve to one iteration of the gauge that matched the tach and speedo faithfully; just not the small gauges (you gotta love Harley).  They all suffered from an completely inept installation recommendation (especially when used by those that already had another instrument in place).

Now it's all come back again.  And once again I won't be able to trade 103's bike :-[ !

Some of the comments we're on topic - but I didn't think all 21 pages of it were.  I was frustrated when I read it, but my comments were my opinion, your differs and that's okay with me.  It appears that the thread I just started about the installation and adaptor kit is heading in the same direction, so I'll put it to rest now.  Thanks. DD

Sounds good to me.  Besides, you've been here long enough to know that rarely does a thread go the distance (21 pages or 2 pages, as is the case with this thread) without any off-topic conversation. :nixweiss:
