Fairing Removal instructions needed please!!
« on: December 28, 2007, 08:49:55 PM »

I received my Hawg Wired amp and speakers today.  Installation looks pretty simple, as Jim described (I got the DCS1202 and two front speakers).

What I do not have is my service manual that details how to take off the front fairing.  As I have not taken one off before, can someone scan in the instructions from the service manual please?  I assume the 2008 is not different than the 2007  (2008 book is on order, but apparently they have not shipped yet) :(

Any tips or tricks would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

This picture/diagram is for 04/05 SEEG and should be the same for your bike.

Once you get all the screws out you will need to stick your hand inside and unplug the headlight (squeeze the plug and pull it off) to remove the outer fairing. Put some socks on your spotlights to protect the paint of outer fairing as you remove it. Screws #6 & #7 are a PIA and have the tendency to fall off and get lost in places you can't see them. I would suggest putting a towel or something under them to catch them if they fall (or you'll be buying a telescopic magnet to find them ;)) Also you will want to cover the front fender to protect that while removing and putting fairing back on.

FiredOOd pretty well hit it right on.  These would be my add'l tips:

When starting the screws when reinstalling the fairing, take your time and don't crossthread any as it is easily done.  They should turn easily.

If you got the $229.95 component speakers, you have to bend the metal fairing crossbraces a little to clear the large components.

Since I now have the HID headlight, I now remove the headlight assy before removing the fairing to unplug it.  I think I would do the same if I had the stock headlight.

The best tip I got from 2Lane and Hd-dude regarding the bottom screws between the forks:  Don't use them any more.  Either get a piece of 1/4" all thread rod about 1-1 1/8" long and screw them into the fairing and then secure with nuts.  The better method is to go to a hardware store and get allen screws to screw into the fairing and secure with plastic nuts.  If you use allen screws, the longest I could find was about 1" long and they are too short so I bought a 1/4" allen screw and bottomed it into the fairing with loctite and then screwed in the 1" allen screw.  Much easier to start nuts between the forks than the MOCO screws.

You ask why go to all that trouble, you will have the fairing off more than you care to in installing all the goodies the members of this site finds.  Good luck.   :)

The socks over the spots are the best thing for giving you confidence in removing the fairing.

The magnet on an extention pretty handy too, if you happen to drop a screw.

Now the gentleman on the hdforum that has instructions (very well laid out) may be feeling safe posting the instructions since he sold his house shortly after the post.

John,  Everyone has good suggestions & tips here.

When you are ready to re-install the fairing, start the front 3 screws under the windshield first.  Not too tight & don't put the windshield in until the other screws are all started.

Best of luck - plan to do this upgrade in a few weeks myself.

Thanks for the info folks.  I'll document with pics to perhaps help the next dude (or dudette) get this done correctly the first time.  I feel kind of like a virgin going to the drive-in for the first time. ;D

The magnet on an extension pretty handy too, if you happen to drop a screw.

put the magnet there BEFORE you drop the screw. Only a matter of time before you do it, and it will not hit the ground.

Catch the screw with it.

One final note that's only been breifly touched on-  all of those screw get torqued to like 12 lbft, IIRC.  That's only slightly tighter than finger tight.  Any tighter and the inner fairing will break over a short period of time.

Go to dealership  buy extra 5 screws, remove the seven.  Do what you have to do, clean faring and wax while off. Take the 13 screws start to put fairing back on. When done you may have one screw left/or not.  the extras collect somewhere may come across them at a later date---AK

Funny you should say that.  As I was attempting to reinstall the fairing, I dropped the one that goes in the lower left inner fairing.  Never did find where the hell it went :'(  Had to ride down to the store and buy two extras.
