Which Motor is the BEST??
« on: January 21, 2008, 12:47:32 AM »

I'm sure I will have tons of different opinions on this one, but I was looking around and I am not to sure on this one!

Which is the best motor to buy if you wanted to build a Bigger motor(reliable not radical) and swap it out on a bike??

 JIMS 120 or 131??     S&S 117 or 124??   Zippers??   :confused5:  :confused5:

I was favoring the JIMS, but I am not totally sure yet!! :nixweiss: I want to stay EFI, not carb.

I am in the planning process now, cause you know I am going to have to out do my 113 that Tommy has now, so I need to start planning so I know what to do soon!!  :stunned:

                                                                Later,
                                                                        MIKE :vrolijk_10:
                                                                                                                 :end:

Mikeynobike,

There isnt enough information about the 131's to really say how reliable they are or will be over time..   I can tell you I would not recommend the S&S 124" to anyone with all the issues I had with this one.   I have not heard too many complaints about the 120 twincam A motor.   The B motor had some issues with crank and recently Jim's had an issue with the lifters, but replaced them for people and took care of the people that ended up with issues.   I am sure someone wasn't happy with the dealings but by and large they took care of it.  The S&S 107, 113, and 117 have been known as reliable.

The S&S heads really dont give headbuilders a lot of room to work with, while the Jim's heads aren't quite so bad.   Call Wes and T-Man and see what they recommend as they are most likely the people who will be doing your headwork and combinations.

Unless you're building a larger motor with stock cases, I'm not aware of any bolt-in motors for the '07's + up, besides the Jims 120 & 131. ;)

I was happy with my reworked Jims 120; 131 hp and 134 tq and ran great on highway and in city averaged 45 - 48 mpg.

Only one problem the faulty lifter grenaded the engine. However to Jims' credit, they replaced the engine at no charge. They now have a new generation of Lifter.

if I had a spare $10k laying around I'd do one of two things:

1. get someone like cyclerama, t-man, r&r, etc to build a 4.125 by 4.625=124" on my stock cases.  These guys are pros and could definitely produce any motor mild to wild depending on your tastes

2. be the guinea pig and bolt in a jims 131...sell off my stocker to reduce costs as long as I was in a state that doesn't check motor numbers...this can also be an issue if you sell the bike

either of these options would give ALL the power you'd ever want in a stock chassis...have had several hi-po builds in the last couple of years(96, 103, 110) and the more I learn, the more I'm inclined to just  get a 124 or bigger from the start and not try to tweak a smaller motor

I'm with you skyhook. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 131" installed in a stock 08 Ultra. Working out swap prices now.

Will it fit in a Stock UC?  ( I thought it was too tall) And where is Jim and how do I find him? My current Ultra goes thru a rear tire at 8K if I put a 131 in would shorten my rear tire life by 4K  ;D  That would mean I'd be changing rear tires once a month ;D

Hey Vazhog. Yes, it will fit the stock 07 & 08 Ultra's. Contact info is : jimsusa.com. They are working in conjunction with HD. You can either buy from the Dealer or direct from Jim's. Same price.(In Canada anyway) Let me know how you make out .   Muffman

Hillside Cycle is having really good success with their 117".

-Hillsidecycle stage2 heads with 10.2-1 compression
-crank welded and trued by hillside...staying with 4 3/8 stroke
-woods tw-6-6 cams
-D&Dfatcat-standard baffle
-Axtel 117 barrels and pistons
-SE 58 MM Throttle Body
-stock gearing. oil pump, and cam plate
-SERT
-Tuned by joe at joescyclerepair

124HP 137 TQ

They just just bored my stock cylinder for a 98" build and redid my heads with new valves, porting and milled heads for 10.2 compression.
Really impressed with their quality and attention to detail.
