Need Advise On Cams in a 103.
« on: January 23, 2008, 08:45:31 PM »

Guys,

My cams are scored and tensioners are shot.      I know.....  I am broke up about it........    Can you tell? :2vrolijk_20: :2vrolijk_20: :2vrolijk_20:

Now is the time to bump up the cams but I am under a 24hr decision and I would like some advise from the people that know.

From what I understand the '05 SEEG 103 comes stock with 253's.  The shop is recommending 255's.  I love the lope so I would like to go as far as possible without major motor mods.  Another dynamic in this situation is from what I was told going bigger would require stronger valve springs.  They are checking the valve guides tomorrow to determine if there is excessive wear and in need of replacement.  They recommended not changing oil pumps or special back plates etc.

I ride this bike about 30k a year so "sanity" unfortunately needs to be thought about.  The mods that I have done so far are SE high flow air cleaner, Sampson true duals, 2003 Big City Thunder baffles and PCIII.

Quick logical suggestions?   :juggle2:

- Cam selection without spring upgrade
- Cam selection with stronger springs
- Any highly recommended “this and that's” while I am in the cam and valve train neighborhood?

TIA!!

Probably the hands down choice around here is the Zippers 575 w/gear drive, and I can't understand why they would not have you upgrade the oil pump. Personally, I like seeing 30 pounds at idle instead of next to zero with the stock oil pump. Which shop are you at?

Zippers or Freedom's bolt in cams for the 103's is the way you want to go. You can look at my signature and see what all I did to mine w/that upgrade. You can also do a search for "Freedom Cams", and "Zippers 575" for info and dyno runs of both of these modifications.

I mentioned Zippers to them.  Fired00d told about Zippers items earlier this month and I liked his response and dyno page.   This is also under warranty guidelines.  Maybe that is why they are not wanting to go Zippers?  Zippers is not that well known about up here in Seattle.  Whenever I speak about them I get blank looks.

Ask if they are familiar with Freedom Cycle in Reno Nevada. For bolt in cams (gear drive) you can't go wrong w/them or Zippers. To be honest if they haven't heard of either one of these then they might not be the ones you want working on your bike. :nixweiss:

You must be at Downtown. Lots of blanks looks there from the new management.

Check out the Latus Harley dyno page, all sorts of combos for the 103.

Alot of these guys will have good info for you, but if you have to stay with the H-D stuff due to the warranty, the 255-cam is a good choice for the 103!! It has good low end to mid range pull!! I ran the 255 on my first 103 and it had good low to mid range pull!! I tried the 258-cam with the 103, it ran good, but it was mostly mid to top end!!

My last build was a 113 and it had the 251-cam which had a great torque curve from 2200 to 6200rpm,  but I am not to sure if you can run that cam without changing springs!!  :confused5:

Since you are running duals, the 255-cam will help you get some low end torque!!

I've tried a hand full of the H-D cams on the last couple of my bikes and the 255 seemed to be the best all around for the 103, staying with the H-D stuff!! Sure there are alot better after market stuff, but since you might have to stay H-D because of the warranty, that would be my choice!!

You may want to check the cam runout post, http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=19679.0
I had my pinion runout checked and cannot go gear drive until that issue is corrected. I have questions in with Zippers. Just my 2cents!

Thank you all for the input! It helped with decision making.  In having to keep with future possible warranty claims I stayed with HD parts.  Putting 30k plus a year that warranty helps find that kind of riding when the bike has problems.   :-\

When warranty expires though I wanna be like FiredOOd.  I do like your setup and input Gary.  Thank you.   ;D

I certainly do. :2vrolijk_21: I have extended warranty on my bike and it never crossed my mind to worry about that. I had the upgrades installed by my dealer who will back his work, and I purchased known quality parts. I just ride the he!! out of it and grin from ear to ear. ;D

Dealer policies vary.  The shop I work with would be the same.  But what about a trip to a distance destination?  I don't know.

Can't answer that question, but really never worried about it. I went with a known good combination and good install. I also wouldn't get something like this done and take off on a trip right after install. Anytime I have upgrades done whether it be a simple exhaust upgrade or major motor work I'll put some local miles on the bike first to assure myself the install was done right and the parts are working correctly. After that I don't worry about it if something does happen that would require major motor work I'd more then likely want to bring it back to someone I'm familiar w/working on my bike. Not to say there aren't good dealers/shops out there, but I'm anal about who wrenches on my bike. I would rather have it shipped back or rent a vehicle and tow it back home before I'd want someone I didn't know working on my bike.

Here's an interesting comparison of a stock 103" '07 police motor with stock cams, SE 255 and Head-Quarters 500 cams.  The absolute numbers may vary from dyno to dyno, but the comparison is pretty unique since it is the same bike, same dyno, etc.:

http://www.head-quarters-usa.com/casestudy2.html

If you have the HD Extended Service Plan, it has very harsh limitations on any mod to the drive train (at least the one I purchased in Feb. '05 does)--it surely doesn't say that an HD cam change will be covered, but an aftermarket cam change won't be.

Good luck with your mods.
