45°, SUNNY, YA GOTTA RIDE…..
« on: January 27, 2008, 01:25:00 AM »

Okay, so maybe last year while I was still riding my old '76 FLH, 45° would seem a bit cold.  But going back to my old Michigan snowmobile racing days, today was warm.

I had to ride today because I just had to hear my new exhaust purring away.  The new V&H Dresser Duals and their Oval muffler sound just like what I wanted.  They are deep and mellow without the chirpy sounds I've heard from some of the others brands.  They bark when asked and quiet down for cruising.  I know they're probably not the best for making power, but they still make my bike run better than it did with the stock pipes.

I did the basic downloaded map, loaded it and I have none of the popping on decel nor any glitches in the mid range at all.  It seems to really run great.

;D ;D I have a hard time keeping the  ;D ;D grin off my face while writing this.   ;D ;D During my ride today, which was a great 88 miles, I rode with my buddy and he has an '03 SE Deuce.  I've ridden his this summer quite a bit while my old '76 Shovelhead was laid up, but today I forced him to ride my SERK and I got back on his Deuce.  We rode curvy roads with top speeds in the 55 mph range.  His bike just seemed rougher and mine smoother.  I think a lot of it was due to the IDS on my SERK.  I also felt that the SERK handled the corners better than his Deuce and with less effort.  ;D ;D ;D

;D ;D Again with the grins, I can't help but think this has to be one of the best bikes made.  ;D ;D It handles well, relatively speaking, it's plenty fast enough, it brakes well and it's smooth. ;D ;D Did I mention I REALLY like the sound of the new exhaust,,,,,, again.....  ;D ;D ;D

Fourth gear seems to be my favorite gear for riding twisty's from 25 mph up to 85 mph.  Feet on the highway pegs and let the motor do the rest.  I'm cognisant of what you all have said about lugging the motor on these, so I don't crank it on at low rpms, just let it gain back up slowly.

 ;D ;D Did I also mention how much I like this bike???  ;D ;D ;D

So I'll ride a bit more this winter and then get it dyno'd, but it does run so very well right now it seems a waste of money to do so.

Thanks for putting up with my ramblings about how much I love this bike....  ;D ;D ;D

One last thing, I also upgraded my rear pegs to running boards for the wife.  Boy they don't give those things away.  I got the Ironside rears with the chrome adjustable mounts.  This lets me actually set them at a slight angle like the front running boards, up just a bit in front.  Approximately $550 including the 20% discount.  I think they look a little less stylish than the pegs, but as long as they make her happy, I'm happy, if you know what I mean...  ;D ;D ;D

I also redrilled another four holes in my mounting plate for the Tour Pak to set it back another 1.25".  That really made a big difference in how she sits on the seat and it changed her leg angle to a more comfortable angle.

Again,  ;D ;D ;D ;D sorry for the ramblings.

Later dudes and dudettes...

Dan .....thanks for sharing your experience with us...it looks like you had a great day :2vrolijk_21:

As I've heard said before, "A great day was had by all..."

I'm kind of bummed because it's going to be sunny and even warmer here today and we have plans to go to the new car auto show at the dome and then spend the afternoon and evening with friends.

It's just so nice to be able to push the new SERK out of the garage and not have to worry about oil leaks on the floor, or do I need to fix my front handle master cylinder, or is my rear brake caliper going to drag like it usually does, or is it going to cut out on me when slowing down and I have to restart before it stops, all questions I used to ask myself before I pushed out the old Shovelhead for a ride.

Not now, just get on and ride...

I know, it could all change at some point when the 110 issues start to crop up, but for now I'm enjoying the hell out of the new SERK.

Real nice report Dan! And don't worry, after owning that 76 shovel, you'll be well prepared for anything that happens on your new 110! The 110 is HD's "Nostalgia Engine"!!! :D

Thanks for the report Dan sounds as if you like your 08 SERK almost as much as I do! Would you mind sharing specific part numbers on the pass. footboards. I've been hanging back waiting for some feedback on these because I need footboards for my wife as well. Doesn't seem as if there are many pan options available for the Ironside insert.

Does the board allow for a lower or more forward profile?

Thanks,

Howie

Howie, here are some pictures of the rear floorboards installed.  They're not as good as they could have been had I taken them outside in the sunlight, but they're better than nothing.

The great thing about the adjustable mount kit is that it allows you to adjust up, down, forward etc, plus you still have the 3" of the frame mounting to move the whole assembly up and down.  It also lets you adjust the passenger footboards to be on a slight upward angle like the rider footboards.  This gives the passenger a little more grip to change position on the seat without their feet sliding off the front of the footboards.

The problem my wife had was that she had her feet behind her knees when seated and it caused her to bounce forward on the seat when hitting bumps.  Now we can get her feet forward a bit and give her some variation for placing her feet.  She's not locked into locking her heels on the pegs.

The part numbers are as follows:

Ironside Collection Passenger Footboard Insert: 52312-07 @ $199.95
Swept Wing Passenger Footboard Kit - Smooth: 50716-04 @ $134.95
Adjustable Passenger Footboard Mount Kit: 50768-07 @ $349.95

I bought from Doc's HD when they had their customer appreciation sale with 20% off, it helped but was still a lot of money.

The sad part about all this is that I had just bought front highway pegs, Ironside collection, to match my other pegs and running boards and they were $149.95 for the pair.  Now I convert the rear Ironside collection passenger pegs to footboards and now I have an extra set of Ironside foot pegs, bummer.

If anyone has any questions, let me know.  I still think our bikes look better with just the pegs, but like I said before, a happy wife if a very happy husband.

Later everyone...

;D ;D ;D  I'm still grinning about how nice this damn bike is.
