My wife and I were flying in to Ft. Lauderdale about 10 years ago and went through exactly the same thing. First try the pilot aborted after starboard wheels had touched and very little runway was left, that's when I realized just how much power those birds have. I could not believe he didn't stall the big fellow, he pulled it straight back and floored it. He came around and made it the second try and I can tell you there was no applause on the plane at the gate, nor did anybody get out of their seats for quite a while. It scared the hell out of all of us, including the flight attendants. It took me several years to get my wife back in the sky after that.

My riding & diving buddy went to Cayman few years back for a dive trip, did the crab landing and he described it as being a little unsettleing looking at the runway from your "side view window". Go to to do it twice, touch and go the first time.

The passengers applauded and the pilot said "I didn't think we were going to make that one"

I've got to think that crabbing is learned pretty quickly since taking off is optional but landing is not.  Applaud all you want for a successful landing.  It sure beats the alternative.  There's some pilot motivation for you.

Here's a novel concept from over 50 years ago.

'An interesting feature of the B-52 landing gear greatly eases the problems posed by crosswind landings. Both the front and rear bogies can be set at angles of as much as 20° to either side of the straight-ahead position. In a crosswind landing, consequently, the aircraft can be headed directly into the wind while rolling down a runway not aligned with the wind. Only the front bogies are used for steering on the ground.'
