Latest 110 Failure
« on: March 04, 2008, 09:26:18 PM »

Well we heard some noises coming from my 110.  Decided to bring it to Harley to have it looked out.   Glad we did.

Dropped 2 lifters they had collapsed, tore up the cam compartment.

Replacing:
Cam plate
Oil Pump
Tensioners
Cam
Bearings
Cam Chain
Lifters with SE Lifters
New pushrods
Assorted gaskets, o rings and such.

24k miles, approx 6k miles on the last headgasket fix thus far no leaks

Drained all the oil, took off the oil pan, opened the oil filter and checked the crank run out.   Also marred the crank on the pinion side, but harley denied the claim saying it will have no effect on the motor / crank.   I was told the crank was within spec, but forgot to ask what the measurement actually was.   Dealer had everything in stock except the tensioners, cam support plate, and oil pump.   3-5 day wait on the parts.

It's hell when you try outrunning Otis and you wind it up so tight it breaks HUH?
Did you mention to the dealer you were racing a Vrod when the problem occured?

Chip you have the wrong day, it was the roadking when I was playing with Otis and that is how I broke the belt.   Then had to wait a day to get the roadking back to bust Hubbards A$$.   Poor Maudie should of retired, now she has a blemished record  and is no longer undefeated hehe.

Besides that VRod didnt pass me until after 120 mph.  It was enlightening and depressing all in the same breath.

Yeah I saw Otis after he busted you. I also asked him how Maude was running. He said the clutch was slipping bad and would have to be replaced. Are you calling it an accomplishment to outrun Hubbard when he's two up and with a slipping clutch? Hell I passed him two years ago on the SEEG when he went into a wobble at 130. Did I outrun him or did he let off trying to stay alive? I didn't and he did and we were both happy he lived!

 :2vrolijk_21:

As far as the hehe stuff, if you can't take it past 120 what are you doing in the hbrr?

Someone is going to have to sort out the details on this and be the disinterested third party reporter?

Were both two up or was it a handicap race (really not interested in handicap scores).

If something broke or slipped making the effort, however, that's just part of running it.  You break you lose sometimes.  But it's got to be an even run to begin with.

Needle was buried Chip, and bouncing off the 120 if that aint enough too bad couldnt tell you where it ended up at speed...  Hubbard is welcome to any rematches he wants!   Happy to oblige him again and again and he knows it too.   You still have a open invitiation to bring that frontier down and run it with me, just like you were at hotsprings.

And yes Otis busted me at 120mph and I would hope a VRod and someone as capable as him could do that on a VRod.    Came by me like a rocket with the needle bouncing.   Waiting on him to run me on the infamous Roadglide then we will have soemthing to talk about.

Now stop jacking my threat   :jack: this thread its about lifter failures.

Don't be confusing the facts Harry

Run it with you at H/S?
You posted you weren't coming, then the last few days postedyou were.
As fickle as you are I wasn't changing my plans.
Bring the Frontier to play with your Jester would be a waste of gas, my gas!
But we can play if you want at M/V.

But to get back on topic,
Don't be racing Otis and there will be no lifter issue!

So sorry Harry to hear about your bike problems.  I am your friend and if I was closer could give you a ole fashion biker hug ------ one where we are all in the same boat together.  Sucks to have a bike down.  You have given me so much help, I am sorry I can't help you out now.  Wish we all could be in each others court when things don't work out like they should.

I wasnt racing Otis on the Jester,  you are confused it was on the Roadking

Atm doesnt look like like we will make MV this year due to end of the quarter business.   Michelle is asking, but we arent optomistic even this far in advance.

Mrs. We thanks it will be ok in about 10 days once the parts get here.   Just sucks to continue to have issues with the 110's.

Mrs.We, Perhaps you could seek employment with HD to fly you around the country giving biker hugs to all those with 110 failures. We would all be happier and you would be rich! (and busy)

Make sure you have an extend warranty . I was told the same thing when I lost a lifter in  Hinton ,WV. The crank went out 10,000 miles later . After the warranty expired. Harley would`t touch it.

Lifter failures can happen at anytime without notice.  It really had nothing to do with the fact that it happened on a 110" motor.  My wife's Low Rider Custom had a lifter fail on a trip back from Sturgis in about '94.  -Left us stranded on SD highway 44 just outside of Winner, SD.  The bike only had about 5K on the motor.
There was an article on cams and lifters in the November issue of American Ironing that had a sidebar with tips on lifters.  It suggested replacing them at about 20-25,000 miles.  I myself am going to follow that advice.  According to the article, it didn't matter if you used stock or aftermarket lifters, they were all prone to failure.  Contaminants can get into the hydraulic unit, and there she goes!    :o

Sorry about this bad news.  Good luck brotha!  I can't wait for the weather to quit here so I can get out and test the new motor.  It should be leaking again by Laconia.
