Bluetooth Helmet gps, radio etc
« on: March 06, 2008, 12:51:13 AM »

So.. who makes a half helmet with bluetooth pre-installed?  I dont want an adapter ad-on for the helmet.  Looking to buy an all in one.

Want it to work with my Zumo 550.  As well as I would wonder who makes a radio that works with the bluetooth as well.  (Not stereo.. but intercom type.)

Any recommendations? (Loaded question as I am sure there are lots of personal preferences on this one.)

Thanks

There are a surprisingly few options yet.  Some.  But not as much as one might expect.

Most commonly used here so far has been the N-Com series of helmets from Nolan.  A few models/styles available.  A few use them in conjunction with various Garmin units to good effect as well.

It's at least a place to start.

So I have ridden with these guys that had there intgercom/radio to talk between each other. I know those weren't done via bluetooth as bluetooth has the limitation of 30 feet around you.

So who makes a radio now that isn't wired connection. Or least has the option of wired or bluetooth? Is there such a thing yet?

autocom has some wireless options available now...
but bluetooth for bike to bike is sketchy....  i think you'd be better of with wired

my only problem with the autocom stuff was that i ended up with crazy qty of wires...  when you add up
cell
ipod
radio
garmin

too much...  great gear but didnt need all that  ...  one thing i have thought of but never done is use the cell phone connection on the NCom as a half assed bike to bike

just call 2lane on the cell phone and leave the line open

hell, most plans have crazy amounts of minutes available anyway

Yeah not looking to do bluetooth bike to bike.  Mostly want the bluetooth portion for the Zumo 550.  But I want to also have a helmet that will work with an intercom system as well.  Not sure whose intercom to buy either.

I guess if I need a wired helmet to do all these things then so be it.  Was just hoping to have a helmet that was maybe bluetooth for the Zumo, and then allow for a wired connection as well for things like intercom, ipod, etc.

I looked at that JM Corp site, and well those all seem to use full helmets.  I would prefer to find something compaitable with a half helmet, and in worst case 3/4.

I been doing a lot of reading on this topic through out this site. Apparently one that is rather common.

But, from what I am finding it looks like the Nolan N-Com N102 is what I am looking for.

It allows me to pair to the Zumo 550, has a jack for me to plug wired into an intercom system, and possible has an aux jack as well for yet a different device and lets me bounce around between them if need be.

Guess I will re-search that one a bit more.

And it looks that some of you report as well that at 85mph on the bike no one can hear the bike or road noise.  Niiiice!

That's been my experience with it Hack.  Have had mine for quite some time now.  Picked it up at a shop in London well before they were available here in the states so it's likely their firmware has been updated a bit since them.  Even with my "old" one it still works as you describe though.

Have made and received calls all day long with it and folks were not aware I was on the bike.  Pair it to your Garmin unit so the phone book, caller ID and a few other functions become viewable on the screen and it gets even easier.

Three connections in the N-Com system.  One for it's battery charger.  The other two are for a helmet to helmet wired intercom and an aux input to take sound from any other audio source.

I believe you can do wired to a midland intercom system as well. (not just helmet to helmet intercom wired)

Which is what I was looking to do.  As those would allow bike to bike communications.  Bluetooth for the garmin. and then I'd have my iPod if I ever get one in an aux.

I think I got it figured out now.

So I need to get:

Nolan N42 helmet with N-Com Capabilities
N-Com Basic Kit
N-Com E-Box Bluetooth
N-Com E-box wired

And that shoudl take care of all my needs then. (In all of this I have already been tracking down the helmet and fouind some good pricing on those already.)

But can someone now maybe point me in the direction of someone who sells the N-Com electronics for some good pricing.

Thanks
Paul

Yeah, but in the off chance you get seperated from your group.  The FM intercom's have up to a 5 mile range depending on terrain.  And  even if it only works for about 2 miles.   Alot better than 490 feet.  And since most of the guys on the road I have seen thus far arent using wireless bluetooth for the intercom systems.  Seems for me, right now the better choice is something like a midland unit that is more compatible with what others are using for bike to bike intercom.

Thanks for the link.

I am beginning to wonder if I need both the E-Box Intercom module and E-Box Bluetooth Module.  I think I can get away with the Bluetooth module (And basic kit of course) and still have everything I want plugged in. (Gamin, Midland Radio for Bike to Bike, and iPod).

Thanks for all the help everyone... mad this an easy purchase for me... (Damn I need another hook in the garage for yet another helmet... thank god I'm single.) LOL

Bluetooth module for one lid most likely.  At least that will be so if you plan to do wired interecom in the other one without it having to pair to either a phone of its own or some other device.

NOpe not worried about intercom for passenger.

I want bike to bike Midland radio intercom. Least then I can talk to other riders in the group etc.

Supposedly I can hook up a wire to the radio instead for the intercom port and have the multimedia port for the iPod and bluetooth will pair to the garmin.
