When to shift into 6th gear
« on: March 17, 2008, 08:57:33 PM »

I'm just wondering what speed, PRM you all shift into 6th gear and does your 5th gear have a whining sound to it?

Can't give you an RPM, but I usually shift into 6th at somewhere between 65-70 mph.  All of the 6-speed HD trannys whine to a certain extent in 6th gear due to the helical-cut gears.  You can lessen that by getting the Syn3 out of the tranny and putting something like Shockproof in there.  I put Mobil 1 V-Twin in all three areas of my ride and it did quiet down the 5th gear whine a little.  ...

I thought the IDS was supposed to take care of the whine on the 08's?

I use rpm as gauge for what gear to choose.  Try to keep it spinning at no less that 2300.  That would mean no 6th gear until about 65 mph at minimum.  Really prefer 70 to be in 6th.  Had no problem at all with 5th gear whine.  Run Redline Heavy Shockproof since about the 500 mile mark.  Swear by the stuff.  It's that good imo.

As others have stated, make sure you do not lug the engine.

I have the Baker OD6 and never had any whining in 5th, and as the others I use Redline HD Shockproof (Pepto Bismol) or Strawberry Milkshake.

The only time I hear whining in 6th is when my wife is on the back telling me to slow down.

I put in the IDS on my 07 (103") and like the others 65 is as low as I go in 6th , usually 70.

When to shift is very subjective, bike weight and speed along with incline all play a part in it. As geezerglide is I run a DD6 from Baker and I can go into 6th relatively early. Than again my bike is an 01 and it came geared different than the later bikes. I don't believe there is a magic number.

It was purported to do that, but I added it to my 07 and didn't really take the whine out of 5th gear until I changed the fluid in the tranny and got the Syn3 out.

I usually keep the RPM at 2,000 or higher.  On a flat road following a car at a steady speed I have put it into 6th at 1,800 RPM and sort of putted along.  It has not knocked or bucked so I don't think I am hurting anything.  If I was going to accelerate or go up a hill I would certainly downshift to 5th or even 4th.

I have not heard any whine except a little bit in 1st gear when the bike is good and warm.  I think the SE Street Performance Touring Mufflers quieted the transmission!

Non-Stock mufflers have a tendency to quiet a lot of things.   :P

Give that man a ceegar !
I've had both (DD6 7& HD) and there's such a world of differencein gearing and power output plus a hundred other variables that there is no answer to this question beyond what sounds and feels right for that particular rider/bike combination at that particular point in the road.

With my Redheaded backwarmer on, I cruise at 70 in 5th at 3000 RPM.
I've only shift to  6th at 75-80 mph and I've taken it to 95 when alone at 3800 rpm in 6th.

We've done a couple of 2007 Classic rentals with 96Bs and the dealers said to not use 6th until 70.

I guess its a personal feeling but I like 2800-3000 rpm in most any gear.

It is all subjective as to weight and incline.  But the best advice as to when to shift into 6th is when you stop accelerating in fifth :bananarock:  Kind of smart ass but true. Gentile acceleration in 6th is fine, but anything more than that you should be in 5th. Acceleration in 6th is usually done via cruise control switch above 70mph minimum for me.

To avoid ANY chance of lugging the motor, wait 'til the rev limiter kicks in!
