Woods belt drive cams
« on: March 27, 2008, 03:18:23 PM »

The last issue of American Iorning had a cool article on belt drive cams.  -Sounds like a good idea.  Anybody tried 'em or about to?

There's an article in this month's American Iron about them.  Seems like a pretty good setup.  Unfortunately, it's pricey.  The pulleys, belt, helical gears, and cam plate will cost you around $1350, then add about $350 for your cams.  Got the prices off of the  web.

I was looking at possibly going this way on my SEEG so I was also researching prices.  Your figures are the best out there right now, and they represent a significant premium over a regular gear drive setup.  With the options I would want  (helical inner gears, chrome cover) your looking at around $1700 not including new cams.  I was also concerned about using Wood cams, since they are known for high lift & short duration with extremely fast ramps.  This tends to create excessive noise and valve train wear.  However, if I read the info on the Wood web site correctly, you can use other companies cams with the belt drive as long as you're willing to stay with the chain for the inner cam drive.  The whole idea for me is eliminating the chain and tensioner, so that option isn't worth considering IMHO.

The biggest advantage I see with the belt drive is the ability to tolerate a little more pinion shaft runout than the gear drives.  Maybe if they decide to get competitive on pricing I could see going that way, but I'm too conservative (cheap) to spend twice as much for an unproven system over one that's been around for awhile like the S&S gear drive.

when I lived in Florida I knew a smart aleck mechanic...I asked him about using tw8 cams and he said "you mean bobby high-dollar wood?"...I really like the belt drive deal...bet it works great and is super eye-candy...I raised the compression on my fxdse2 to 10.7 and used se257 cam...in a bagger I'd probably set comp to around 10.0 and use yuill 14 or redshift 575...what I'm saying is a simple cam/compression upgrade can give a plenty wide power band and not break the bank

just an FYI, woods belt drive /gear package includes cams. and yes, those cams are proprietary, you cannot use anyone elses cams.

emember also that there are clearance issues with certain pipes, fatcat being one of em. it is a good system and instructions are easy.

is it for everyone? no
is it a cure all? no
would i put one on my personal bike?  no reason to, i have the new style chain drive.

I feel the same way.  I haven't heard of any problems with the new style hydraulic chain tensioners.  Why throw away something that you know works, for something that expensive- and really untried too.  :2vrolijk_21:

Agree...I have the new chain drive on mine too...the only thing that I agree with on the American Iron article, is the "cool" factor when you put the clear lexan cover over the belt drive and get to see it working.  I kinda like that idea...but not at that price, plus, until this new style tensioner proves bad, I'm sticking with it.

A problem looking for a solution is what I've got to say. The gear drive cams being installed these days run so quiet as to be almost silent (as compared to the effin cam chain etc) They are not expensive and produce good power.   Why would anyone want to make the whole process more complicated ?

I was kind of looking forward to that whine, like listening to a blower or a turbo spooling up  :2vrolijk_21:

it is actually less complicated. bobby woods is an inovator and has been since hot rods were invented. dude is older than baseball! and his stuff works. question you have to ask yourself is: is this for me?

beauty of his belt drive is--------takes care of runout. when gears wont work, its better than chain. BUT we all know if runout is that great, the crank should be corrected.

next plus for the belt drive is for those of us that want the most of our bikes. the belt drive allows almost instant cam timing changes. a really big plus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can move yuor motors "hit" back and forth in less than the time it takes to index plugs. that is a major plus if you are that far into motors. once again, boby wood comes up with something that works.

i can guarantee you all one thing, if you buy any of his products, they work

absolutely, no doubt about it, you get your moneys worth. contrare to lots of centerfold adds.

One thing I see no one has touched on is belt life. I have spoke to Bob on this and he gave me some figures. That was some time ago though so as of today I have no idea if they are still accurate. These engines are not free spooling , meaning that like many engines that are using a cam timing belt if the belt breaks valves hit pistons.  Dont get me wrong I am not bashing the product only looking at something that would concern me. Being that I once had a timing belt break in a car and the head was junk once that was over.  I have a call into Bob and will get back to you all on belt life.

Has anyone used the spring loaded gear drive set up?? I had a customer send me a link on one but that was as far as it went.
