In Cali you don't get the title until you pay the loan off and then the bank sends it to you.

In the interm you just have the registration with your name on it and the lien holder information.

That may be.  But it is kinda nice to actually have your title in hand.
What would be even nicer is to be able to keep/get back the Certificate of Origin. I purchased my bike from out of state so I had the CO to take to DMV to get bike titled/registered. I made a B/W copy of it, but wish I would have thought to make a nice high resolution color copy of it for framing.

In Virginia the Lien Holder keeps the title until the loan is paid off. At that time they will send you the title and on it there will be a stamp saying Lien Released with a signature from a representative of the lien holder.

In Kentucky, you go to the local courthouse, pay sales tax and registration fees. They ask if there is a lien against the property. The lending institution will also send a form there letting them know there is a lien. The courthouse sends the title to Frankfort (state capital), and it shows the lien all over the title when you get it back in 30 days or so. After you pay off the loan, you have to get a release from the lien holder and physically carry the title to the courthouse and get a release stamped on it. I've seen people not go through that final process several times and get mad when they try and sell the vehicle and find the lien is still there even though it's been paid off for 2 years.

Pay cash for the toy and that's not a problem.

IN MICHIGAN, MY CREDIT UNION  APPLIED FOR THE TITLE, THE STATE SENT IT TO ME WITH THE CREDIT UNION AS FIRST LEANHOLDER, THE CREDIT UNION TAKES A COPY, AND I HOLD THE ORIGINAL. WHEN PAID OFF, ALL I DO IS TAKE BACK TO THE CREDIT UNION FOR THEM TO SIGN OFF

In Florida it's the same - bank/lien holder holds the title.  After vehicle is paid off they send the title.

Then you burn the note & it rains for 3 days straight usually.

Washington is the same.  Now they have electronic titles for the banks and they send you a lien release when the loan is paid.  You only carry a copy of the registration with the "Registered owner and legal owner info".

It's as good as a title but most exchange it for a paper title to have on hand for when they sell the vehicle.  You still use a paper title to transfer ownership.

Here's a site to search if you have a question about a state.  This is their Title and registration page Title info

In NY, you get the title after registering the bike.  It has the lien holder listed on it.  When the loan is satisfied, the bank sends a lien release letter to the owner.  This lien release must be given to the new owner along with the transferred title when selling.  I don't know how it works to sell a vehicle with a balance on the loan.  I've never done it.

I don't finance toy's.
Pay cash an you get a title in a few weeks from DMV.

That would require preplanning and waiting for my toys... and " I WANT IT NOW!" is the only thing going through my head when I am on the showroom floor.
