Here we go again
« on: April 09, 2008, 05:07:02 PM »

Just got through washing the bike and yep, I noticed the rear cylinder is leaking from the top again (40k miles).  >:( Two different dealerships (sister stores) have worked on the bike. Both times new cylinders and pistons. The last mechanic promised I would never be back. Well he's right. I'm going to a good independent mechanic this time. He already says the stock cylinders need to go. What a bunch of crap!  :soapbox:

How many miles did you get on this fix?  Do you have any warranty left?

I got 9000 on since the last repair. The bike is under factory warranty until October. But I don't think they can fix it. Probably never will be able to.  :sauer005:

Wow, 9000 miles since last repair - you are doing better than average.

Rumor is that there is a New new version of the new gasket that is currently on back order.  You might take advantage of the warranty one more time before you get into your own pocket  :nixweiss:  It just irritates the crap out of me that we have spent big bucks on a bike that is not dependable and then we feel that to have a dependable bike we have to spend more $$$$ from our own pocket :sauer005:

If you can verify the gasket part number, you'll probably find out that gasket 16801-07A was used. This is the gasket that came out about this time last year. Shortly after the first of the year, HD Tech Services started mailing an experimental composit gasket directly to dealers for this repair. HD Net now has the -07A as obsolete and -07B is the new number.

So far, (all disclaimers apply) I haven't heard of anyone with the newly numbered -07B gasket continuing to have a problem although they haven't been in use for more than a few months.

If you got the -07A the last time it was fixed, you might want to give the -07B a shot. You're putting enough miles on quickly enough that you would make a good test candidate for the rest of us waiting to see if this is as good of a fix as we're hoping for.

I got the A gasket the first time. Second time it was (supposed) to be the B version. Some think these are all being caused by cylinder liner movement. Doesn't matter what gasket you use then I suppose.

I'm going to a professional motor builder this time. We'll see how that goes.  :nixweiss:

When was your second fix done?

I'd bet Howie's farm that you got the -07A gasket because the composite gasket didn't start getting sent out until very late last year or early this year. It just became the -07B within the last week or so.

Are you planning on doing anything else while it's torn apart?

I'm going to change the cam out that they put in last build. It's way too high lift and really messed up the lower end torque. I was ignorant at the time and just followed the dealer recommendation. I'll know more after next Tuesday when I take it in and go over my options.

Knowing that sooner or later they will have to go back inside to do another repair, which cam would you recommend for lower end torque?

(It's just a matter of your imagination that I'm up this early)

What cam did they put in and what are you planning to go to?  Agree with Chief, unlikely you got the 'B' version last Sept.  First I heard of it was last Dec.
