Key fob battery
« on: April 17, 2008, 06:12:49 PM »

Just curious how long folks' key fob batteries are lasting. My '05 seems to be weaker. Probably gonna replace it soon.

And now the truth......

Rode up to Twin Peaks in San Francisco and shut my bike off.  Now keep in mind that I have always had my bike programmed so that the alarm sets automatically.  I go take care of whatever business I was there for and come back to the bike.  Out of habit, I've already got the keys out and pressing the key fob as I'm approaching the bike but I don't see the turn signals flash.  Uh-ohhhh. :nixweiss:

I messed around with it for quite awhile before I finally surrendered to the fact that I was not going to be successful in getting it to disarm.  I walked back down to the drugstore and bought a battery (pricey little things).  Walked back to the bike and still nothing.  Oh crap, now what?

Oh yea, we're able to disarm it by using the turn signals.  Get into the saddle bags to look for the owner's manual and remember that I took it out the day before (looking at something or other) and left it laying on the coffee table.

I call Jim and he finally walks me through it and I get the bike disarmed and I get home to my manual.  Called the dealership the next day and they suggest that I buy another battery (remember, we're always supposed to try the easiest thing first......and we've all had an experience with bad batteries from the mfg.).  Yep, that's all it was.....YEP, they have a battery and when they go, they go right now! :2vrolijk_21:

Just curious how long folks' key fob batteries are lasting. My '05 seems to be weaker. Probably gonna replace it soon.

Set my alarm at a restaurant couple months ago.  Came out, fingered the fob... uh oh.  Ended up holding the fob real close to the bike and I was saved. Replaced the battery next day.  Whoa! Better range than I ever knew!  30 feet, maybe?  Now I'll use the range as the "Lo batt" indicator.  I don't use the alarm very much, tho.  So, about 3 1/2 years life.

Well, D00d, I'm still on the same ole one that I got in late '03.....guess this is another battery that's gonna challenge us.  Don't leave me stranded here.  (always a good idea to carry a spare key fob hidden on the bike just in case)  8) har!  :huepfenjump3: spyder

Keep in mind the new ones, without the button, will die faster, especially if you mess around with the bike a lot in a way that causes the bike to look for the key fob. Mine died on a recent trip. One gas stop was fine and the next it would not disarm. After trying twice, I got the buttons right to disarm using the turn signals. I moved the bike out of the gas stations way and replaced the fob battery (I carry extras). Once again it worked fine. Mine was just over 18 months old but I do ride a lot (40k on the bike). Carry a spare friends!  ;)
