Letter From Harley????
« on: April 17, 2008, 10:55:02 PM »

I received a letter today from HD asking me to become a member of their "Harley-Davidson Advisory Panel".

Who else has received these in the past?  If so, what does it entail?

Just thought I'd through this out and see what happens.

Thanks.

Dan, once you sign up they will send you an email every month to fill out a survey. Most of the survey centers around your buying habits over the last month. They want to know your spending tendencies on motorclothes and accessories. Every once in awhile they will let you spout off on how you really feel about their products, including the motorcycles. There is a space at the end of each survey to leave comments but they say that it is "not a direct line to Technical Services so please send your comments to your dealer".

Every once in awhile they'll send you a little token of their appreciation for you belonging. Bandanna or some such thing. Been on the "panel" for a couple of years now.

Cost free market study's (well if you don't count the bandanas). Noone markets their brand better-noone!  :2vrolijk_21:

I've been doing it a couple of years as well.  It sometimes give you insight as to where they are heading in future marketing and product development.  For example, several months ago they questioned you on credit cards you used as well as the brand of gas you put in your bike.  I am not at all sure  they read the comments section as I usually give them my 2 cents in a provocative  manner and never hear back.

I've been on this panel informally advising people not to buy a new HD.

I got a hat, (pretty nice one, but I don't usually bitch, don't think it does any good) just as said above P/A buying habits and miles ridden.

Received a similar letter and also a survey. Shredded the survey. On the back of the letter I wrote.

" My selling Dealer has changed so many aspects of his dealership all to the negative that I cannot begin to express my displeasure in the format of your attached survey. If you really would like to effect a change in the way longtime loyal Harley-Davidson customers feel about your dealerships, you'd get off your butt, out of your suit, onto a motorcycle and ride from dealership to dealership and check them out personally. "

And I signed it along with my address. I doubt seriously I'll hear word one back from the VP who's name appeared on the front, but it made me feel better. I've bought 7 Harleys, (5 new[4 CVOs}) in the past 10 years from SD H-D and my business isn't valued in the slightest by current management. This being a public and family site, I can't say what I really feel. I love H-D's, but it seems more and more the dealerships are falling into the hands of cutthroat business people who don't give a damn about anything beyond the bottom line. I'm not against the bottom line, but there's a right way and a wrong way in my mind on how to achieve it and it seems the latter is winning out these days. ALL of which might explain the cutbacks and layoffs announced by H-D yesterday.

Thanks for all the input on this "letter" question.

I'm going to sign up and give it go.  All it will cost is a bit of time and I waste that much time rereading all the threads here anyway.

thanks again, I'll let you know if anything earth shaking happens.

Speaking of earth shaking, here in St. Louis yesterday morning we had an earthquake.  It was centered in IL about 125 miles east of us.  I didn't feel the first quake at about 4:30 am, but at 10:15 am I was sitting at my desk at work and the chair started to move and my monitor bounced around all the time the ceiling tiles were making noises.  I understand they felt it as far north as MI and someday there is going to be a BIG one here in the central US area.

Later dudes and dudettes...

Hey Spidey,
You've never been one to candy coat anything.  Let us know how you really feel.  I've been telling you for years what I really feel about NY a$$hole at SD HD, do you finally get it????  Just breakin' balls here bro. I do hope that now that HD has over produced themselves into a corner,  and the average consumer is starting to push back a little, that the MoCo smarten's up a bit and get's a little control over their business.  Maybe we'll see a little improvement coming soon, and loyal customers will be appreciated a little rather than being pissed on all the time.

Sad to say, the MoCo isn't about to smarten up anytime soon. Bubba_T and I rode around San Diego County today and visited the local H-D dealerships. In spite of huge layoffs and losses by H-D, all dealerships were still doing business as usual. No deals on new motorcycles, ridiculous prices on used ones. Parts and accessories at list price. If I woke up tomorrow morning as CEO of H-D Inc, the first thing I'd do is issue an edict that prices of new motorcycles were to be slashed by 10%. Next I'd institute a program where a custom could order his/her H-D with the motor, wheels, seat of their choice. Beyond that, I'd be coming down hard on any dealer with excess inventory unwilling to offer discounts on new and used motorcycles as well as P&A. And finally, the full wrath of the MoCo's Legal Dept would be brought to bear on any dealer with a less than normal amount of warranty claims. (seems like that'd be a good indicated that dealer was denying claims independantly of the Factory) And the list goes on. Now if I can figure all that out without having attended the Wharton School of Business, seems like a guy making several million bucks a year should be able to as well. I'm glad I don't want a new H-D. Their not gonna be around much longer at this rate.

BB,
For a change, we both have the only bikes we'll need for a while.  Maybe in 8-10 years or so,  Jap Inc. might have something worth riding. I do agree that the Moco F'ed up with increasing the capacity that they did over the last few years.  But again,  the law's of economics doesn't apply to HD.  They just keep screwing their customers.......and we still come back (I'm to blame too!!!!).
