Oil pressure woes (LtBawb)
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:54:06 AM »

Yesterday at the end of a 50 mile ride Bob's (LtBawb) bike had an oil light come on.

This morning with a mechanical gauge the pressure reads about 2 psi at idle, not warmed up.
The most it would go up to was about 28 psi @ 3000.

As the engine warmed up at idle it was close to 0.

Miles are just over 15000, and it is due for an oil change.

#'s with the rocker boxes warm:

1000-1500 0-2psi
2000 6 psi
3000 14 psi
4000 20 psi.

Drops off fast below 1500.

When the sender was in (and the bike hot) the factory gauge would only go to about 5+ psi. When backing off the throttle the gauge would drop slowly then just "fall off".

Have not looked inside a filter yet.

Are these the symptoms of the chain wear plates failing?

Unusual for only 15K miles?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess I should have noted; for those that don't know the bike we are talking about:

2005 SEEG, minor mods, A/C, Reinharts and download.

What year bike?????? What motor????? No matter what I think it is time to pull the cam cover and check the oil pump. I will bet you will find it is trashed.

Sounds like it is time for a fueling pump.

IF you don't want to change out the pump...LMR-2 Baisley spring for starters and AMSOIL 20-50. Provided there's no internal stuff going on you will likethe result...I won't own a twin cam without a Baisley spring in it...

We had to stop working on the bike for other reasons, but are in the midst of at least changing the oil, since it is of unknown quality and age (bike was bought used).

I have the oil filter draining in my garage now, will cut it open later and have a look.

Just had my 05' in the shop with 22K on the clock.
Oil pressure would fall off after about 1 hr. of operation, then light would flicker at idle.

Cam bearing repair kit and also replaced the oil pump.

All is well now.

The oil filter didn't look too bad.
So what is normal and what is a concern?

The pictures below show the area of the filter that had the most orange flecks, very small. There were a few other pieces scattered around but the majority is right here.

Is "any" too much, would this be normal?

This is the first HD filter I have cut open in a very long time. Miss having my filter opening tool  :(

No expert on this, but w/the loss of oil pressure and those specks/pieces of the tensioners in the filter I would be concerned. :nervous: Even as small as those pieces are I would think there would be some oil passages somewhere in the motor that they could obstruct. :nixweiss:

Colors are difficult to see in all the pictures I have seen of tensioners. So what color are the tensioners orange - yellow?

The flecks in the filter are orange.

What you have there looks like specs of the tensioner shoes. Pump is most likely hurt. The best thing going right now for the money is the SE billet camplate and pump combo 25283-07 Retail is 429. This uses the new style 07+ pump which is a high volume pump. I have done several builds with them recently and they work very well.

time for gear drive

I mentioned that to him already, is more then he wanted to hear right now, we are leaving for York in 2 days.

I know this question is going to come up.........

What cams?

Bob's riding style is similar to mine. No race bikes here, more concerned with the low and mid range torque and overall ride-ability. He is running RH pipes and I am not sure as to which "tuner".

If he's going to change/go gear drive I would recommend either Zippers 575's or Freedom (Yuill Brothers) cams. Both of those are bolt in and will give him better performance.
