Is there a way you can visually tell which gasket is installed? I noticed on another threard that the ealier gasket has 2 ears on it but don't know if they are visible after install.

The "A" gaskets have visible "ears" with rivets exposed... The rivets connect the layers of the gasket.   The newer "B" gaskets do not have the ears...they are a single layer composite material...

It will be on your work order. Mine was replaced with an 'A' gasket a few weeks ago, before I knew about the 'B' gasket' to push the issue. I'll be back soon as my rear jug is weeping.

My '08 SE RK goes in on April 29th. The service manager said the 07A gaskets are the only ones out there. They say there is no upgrade available. Maybe because I live in canada We can't get them yet? Will see next week.  :(

It's more likely they are not aware of the "B" gasket.  You should call MOCO tech services and have them contact your dealership.

Some people are saying you have to log a case with MoCo to get the 07B gaskets, otherwise the dealers just use the parts they have in stock.

tell your dealer to check on HDNet and they will find the gaskets there.  Also, call customer service at the MoCo and open a ticket on your gasket leak.  They will give you a ticket number.  Give that to the dealership and when they call in to the MoCo and provide the ticket number, the MoCo will send the 07B gaskets.

That was the case before the gaskets were issued a number. The only way to get them was through Milwaukee. Now that they have been assigned a number, the problem seems to be the dealers not being made aware that there is a new gasket. If the parts department is not told there is a new number, they probably won't find out until they go to order more of the 07As and find out that they are now obsolete.

It's not the dealer's fault they don't know about the 07B gaskets. Harley evidently has done nothing to notify them of the change. I guess they would rather do the repair again when the 07A gasket fails than instruct the dealers to throw away the A's and order the B's. Then again, they probably don't have the supply capacity to get the gaskets to the dealers if all dealers wanted them at once.

Chuck does HD have to buy back or replace the obsolete gaskets the dealer have?

I don't know anything about how they work that. My thought is that with most parts, the revisions aren't as critical as with these gaskets, so using up old stock isn't really a bad thing. Not this time.

The Service Mgr. at my dealership referred to a bulletin on the 7B's a couple of times.  Also had info on torque "no change".  Some folks read more than others or stay on top of changes more than others most likely. Not sure how the MoCo disseminates this type of info though.

Appears these were an "official" replacement only a couple of weeks or so ago & prior to that were by request only.

Well Im having the 7B's installed and my mech says there was no liner movement on the cylinders. He did state that where the oil leaked it burned the paint on my cylinders so under warreny they are going to replace both cylinders. I am not sure about that call but I am just going along with the ride. :nixweiss:

Asked a guy in the shop at the dealer about the cylinder liner movement, he said some were not machined even and not moving. HMMMMMM.

That sounds more realistic to me, most of the time when a liner starts to move it doesnt stop and there is a knock that goes with it. I havent seen a cylinder that has had movement yet, but would like too or atleast a top and bottom pic of it.

you can tell visually which gasket is installed just by looking at it.  the "new" but still crappy no good gaskets have a silver graphitish look to them which you can see between the cylinder and the head
