ok, if i'm following along correctly the new cam plate requires new bearings also? doesnt come with them?

The cam plate is bare. No tensioners , no bearings. It does have the bearing retainer plate and clips to hold the tensioners.

Jim, here's another twist, I have an 05, I think I want to go gear drive, would you recommend the newer plate and pump with gear drive, or go feuling plate and pump?

For the money I would use the SE plate/pump combo. Also add a baisley spring or Zippers shim on the bypass spring

Hydraulic, solid or roller lifters - they are the interface between the cam and the push rods.

Tappets came about because early hydraulic lifters tended to leak down and cause a "tap" that sounded like solid lifters out of adjustment.

The obvious problem with hydraulics is that you can't adjust out the noise.

Many, many moons ago we used the term tappets quite frequently with customers who were complaining about engine noise, especially with the higher performance cars.

"they wouldn't call them tappets if they didn't tap"

Then we would try and convince them that it the valve train is tapping just a bit at least the valves aren't burning (big problem when leaded gas disappeared).

Based on the pictures they do not appear to be that bad.  Is the chunk out of the rear one from disassembly?

Might not look bad to someone that sees/works on them on a daily basis but it sure makes me glad I don't have to worry about them anymore.

Neal glad you got them done you can now have peace of mind. Next time we do cams and gear drive though. ;) :)

The 02 RK has about 55k miles on it & I am planning to do cam tensioners, etc.  Figure they are about gone by now.  Helpful info in this thread.  Currently debating the kit vs an upgrade plus kit to a 95 from the 88.

Just wish there was some continuity to wear patterns on these.  40-50k miles or more in some cases.  In the teens in others.  The red bike's were shot in the high teens.  No way it would have gone to 25k miles.  Yet at 20k miles the old SERGs looked just short of new.  Still think the SERG will get gears and bearings this winter.  Don't even want to have to worry about it.
