Agree with you on that one Spyder...I'd like to know how this stuff compares to say AmsOil, Mobil 1 V-Twin, etc....

http://www.oilweb1.com/Technical_Information/Motorcycle_Oil_Comparison.pdf

This report is dated March 2006 and was commissioned by Amsoil.  From the Amsoil website: "The testing used to evaluate the lubricants was done in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures. Test methodology has been indicated for all data points, allowing for duplication and verification by any analytical laboratory capable of conducting the ASTM tests."  So take what you will from it.
I haven't read the entire thing, but the rankings on p24 list Amsoil #1 (surprise, surprise) and Mobil 1 V-Twin #2.  Syn-3 is ranked #6.  I don't imagine the information is too outdated and I don't believe a large company like Amsoil would stake their reputation on faulty lab evidence posted for all to see.  I'm sure a few here with more miles under their belt and knowledge/experience will be able to comment on the comparison and whether or not the performance metrics used (wear protection, evaporation, gear performance...) were valid/useful.

FYI, these were the oils used for the SAE 50 test group:
AMSOIL MCV
Bel-Ray EXS
BMW
Castrol GPS
Castrol V-Twin
Golden Spectro 4
Golden Spectro American 4
Lucas High Performance Motorcycle
Mobil 1 V-Twin
Motul 300V Competition
Pennzoil Motorcycle
Royal Purple Max-Cycle
Screamin Eagle Syn3
Torco T-4SR
Valvoline 4-Stroke
Yamalube 4-R

Amsoil, Red Line and Mobil1, have been rated as the top syn oils by several independent studies, the one I have is a few years old, but probably hasn't changed much. Also the ratings move around depending on the viscosity being tested.

A few weeks ago I went to my local shop to get some MTL, they didn't have it, but had Red Line Primary Case Oil, they said that Red Line now recommends for the primary. So I bought some, I think the primary gets to much attention when it comes to the oil, there very little lubrication going on here, mostly heat dissipation. Below is the description from the Red Line web page.

 V-Twin Primary Case Oil

Red Line’s new V-twin Primary Case Oil is designed specifically for ’84-to-present V-Twin American motorcycle engines, including aftermarket engines of similar designs. Similar to our MTL, this product is for use in the primary chaincase with wet-diaphragm spring clutches.

Designed to operate over a wide temperature range, this Primary Case Oil improves clutch operation while reducing wear and temperature. Where most synthetics are too slippery for clutch operation, this friction-balanced product is balanced to provide less slip, smoother operation, and helps to apply more power in modified engines.

Some of us had commented last year about the "new" V-Twin labeled products from Redline.  As best we could tell, the only difference from the original products was the new name and an extra couple bucks per quart.

My shop stopped carring the MTL, just the V-Twin Primary, so I bought it. Like I said, for the primary both are probably over kill.

True.  Any decent ATF would probably be more than sufficient.

What is this amsoil?  I did all my fluid changes on my 02 fatboy.   Can you use amsoil for the primary and tranny as well?

Last time I got Amsoil it was $9.25/Qt.

Just ordering some today, current price here is $26.23/Qt.  Plus $13.59 delivery charge for 5 Qts.

I use Amsoil in the engine, primary, and clutch plus if you are going to buy it you might as well get the oil filter.  I just bought some yesterday for my cars and my other bike since they didn't have Amsoil in them.  I was going to get some for the SEUC and the Amsoil dealer asked how many miles I currently had on the Amsoil in it now. I said about 2000 miles and he told me I would be good for 25000 miles with what I had.  I know i won't go 25000 miles but I may go to 10000 miles.  He also said for the cars change it once a year or every 25000 miles and Amsoil will guarantee their produce.

He is crazy. I am an Amsoil Commercial Dealer. I run it in everything I own. I will  not run it more than 3k in any of my bikes. I have seen what happens if you leave it in your bike too long. Thank God it wasn't my bike.

DCFIREMANN is absolutely, unequivocably correct, regardless of the expected lifespan of any lubricant, they loose "lubricity" as they get older. Heat has alot to do with the breakdown of the molecules. Another VERY important fact about any hydraulic fluids-they are HYDROSTATIC...they draw moisture in from the air, which begins to contaminate the fluid. I use MOBIL V-Twin which is supposed to be good for 10,000 miles, I change it every 2,500 miles. The brake fluid should be changed out on a scheduled basis too...

If you have a Harley with an oil leak, do you still have to change the oil, or can you just keep topping it off?

Check the gas, fill the oil, and change the filter every 3,000!  ::)

Should work.  My father-in-law has a 2002 Dodge Ram with a 318 V8.  It burns about a quart every 500 miles.  He's been using the "flow-through" method of changing the oil in it, as suggested in the post above, since it started burning oil at around 200,000 miles.  It now has 425,000 on it. :o ;D

syn3 is junk.   Lucas is a better lube in all three holes.   amsoil is going in my next oil change.   the report made me a believer.   there is no extended oil in our scoots.  get the chit out at 3K.  Hell oil is cheap.  don't f up your motor over pennies.
