Floorboard extenders
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:02:11 PM »

Anyone have any suggestions for what type of extenders to use on an 08 Ultra to push the floorboards out a bit. Not looking to move them forward just want a slightly wider, less bowlegged stance.
Thanks in advance.

Did the right side last night.
Used two pieces of 1/2" stainless steel pipe.
Fine sanded the stainless pipe exterior to get it almost as bright as the chrome.
Replaced the two 1" long  x 1/2" N.C allen head bolts with 3" long x 1/2" N.C hex head stainless steel capscrews.
(The aftermarket 1" extensions weren't long enough for my size 15 boots.)
Total cost of Mod = $10 and 15 minutes of labor, huge improvement.

The left side can use the same spacer and 3" bolt for the front left bolt, but the two left rear bolts are smaller, 5/16" diameter.
I may do the left side after a few rides but it doesn't bother me as much as the right side did.

Thanks for the $aving tip. Went to local hardware store, told the guy what I was doin and he pushed me away from stainless. He said it was softer than reg. steel and gave me some grade 8 hex bolts. I used 1 1/8" bronze sleeves for spacers and it worked out sweet. When I took out the HD 1" bolts GRD8 was stamped on them. I probably will only do the right side because the air cleaner was what was pushing my leg out any way. :2vrolijk_21:

I noticed the GRD 8 on the OEM bolts as well. My thoughts were two:
Even at 300 lbs, I am not going to bend two 1/2" Stainless bolts by standing up on the floorboards so GRD8 may be overkill. Secondly, on the left floorboard there is only one GRD8 x 1/2" bolt and two GRD3 standard bolts x 5/16 dia. holding the floorboard to the frame and jiffy stand.
So on the left side we need two spacers with clearance for a 5/16" bolt and one spacer for a 1/2" bolt.
If you are using spacers that are 2" long, you will need two 5/16 N.C bolts x 3" long and one 1/2" N.C bolt 3" long.
Also the 1/2"  bolt on the left side must have an Allen Head, there is no way to get a socket or wrench on a hex head capscrew bolt on the left side. (Hex head capscrews are fine on the right side though)

Kury makes a set they are about $40.00. I put a set on my SERK a good $40 investment. They make a lot more comfortable ride. KB

Have the Bakers on and really like the difference. The shop is only 1 mile from me, but I still had to chase them down in Vegas to get them. Close the shop, go to Reno Street Vibrations, down to Vegas Bikefest, you know the story.  Dave

Will the set from Kuryakin have any impact on lean angle?

It would have to on the right. I scrape the stock floorboard on that side. Not sure about the left as I scrape the kickstand on that side with the stock setup.

YES. you only have a 27 degree lean angle, That's why the floor boards burn off on the rear if you ride it like you should.

Because the bolt is stainless steel does not mean it is strong it means it is corrosion resistant, stick with grade 8 bolts as they are stronger. :2vrolijk_21:

Any idea why you woul need grade 8 strength in a floorboard bolt to rest your foot on it ?
Even if you stood up on two 1/2" stainless bolts, you're not going to bend them.

My thought would be that the leverage put on the bolt is quite large and purely for the sake of safety you would be better off. The price of a grade * bolt compared to a grade 5 can not be that much . Let me know what size , thread and length and I will see if we stock them , if so I will sell them cost plus 10% and freight.
