« on: May 20, 2008, 08:59:13 PM »

Do all the gas companys add ethenol now ?
I cant find any good fuel for my bike in Tenn.
I just wonder how much leaner this ethenol makes the bike run?

I am not sure ethanol makes your bike run leaner - it definitely makes it run hotter because ethanol burns hotter - but I don't think it runs leaner...

David, when I lived in Peoria, IL there was a Phillips 66 station that sold ethanol-free premium unleaded.  I found no difference in the way the SEEG ran with it versus the 10% ethanol gas that everyone else sold, other than I did get a bit better fuel mileage with the ethanol-free gas, both in the bike and with the cages.

While the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio for gasoline is 14.7:1, it is 9.0:1 for pure ethanol.  A 10% ethanol mixture will in fact make the engine run leaner, by approximately .5 AFR value.  If you compare the chemical formulas for gasoline and ethanol, you will note that the ethanol carries it's own oxygen molecules, while gasoline is strictly carbon and hydrogen.

Ethanol   C2H5OH

IsoOctane  C8H18

Originally alcohol was limited to 10% maximum (gasohol) by regulation.  However, now that alcohol has been substituted for other chemicals in the production of "oxygenated" fuels for emission reductions, you can wind up with up to 15% in some blends.  This will definitely affect the way your bike runs.

We can buy pure gas at Sinclair stations. I doubt methanol will hurt anything. I used to put it in injected small block Chevy's it took a bigger main jet but you could use a lot more timing advance and a lot more compression. It runs cool and will prevent detonation. Ice would form on the intake on 1/4 mile passes.

All I know is that the gas I'm getting most everywhere these days smells different (not good) and seems to get a tad worse mileage on my scooter too.  >:( Not sure exactly what it is though.  And, of course, it's more costly these days.   :'( aaaaargh.  spyder

I can find gas stations all day long that don't have that crap in their fuel around town here. If I'm not mistaken, the gas stations by law have to post it on the pump if the fuel contains ethanol
