Porthole's question reminded me of a couple of other things that got asked just before "The Incident."

If that base mount really is interchangeable might be a fact worth finding out.  Reasons being that, if the experience with mine is anything to go by, you might find yourself glancing at the speed display in the GPS unit more and more easily than the on speedometer itself.  Not only is it more accurate but it's more in your line of sight.  But since you're already used to glancing to your left to find speed it might be easier to get used to over there.

The other reason was actually more important though.  If the controls on the GPS are such that some functions really do prove to manageable going down the road you'd prefer to be able to do them with your left hand rather than your throttle hand.

True...but if I am going to play while riding...I could just as well be on Cruise Control.

There were pages and pages of thoughts, questions and supposed comparisons written about this before "the incident."  (well, maybe a page or so)

But it all boiled down to "very cool," "oh man, you're the first to get one,"  "Congrats," and a bit of chatter on what might be the good points and bad.  Most important thing now, however, is GET OUT THERE AND USE THAT THING SO YOU CAN TELL US ALL ABOUT IT.

C'mon Bill, it's just a little rain.  You're not gonna melt man  [smiley=laugh.gif]

I had enough rain riding between 4/27 and 5/2 to last the year!

It's going to be one of those "learned" things anyway.  Just getting the hang of what feels comfortable and when.

With the HD unit, they supply a aux input cable to plug it in the radio...you can also do an earbud.  I have not played yet but there is no speaker in the mount.

Too bad they don't do a little speaker on the mount like their radar detector...with the HD MP3 player already using the AUX input, guess I'd have to go speakerless on the GPS...probably not a bad idea to gag it anyway, as I find the ones in cars can start to get annoying after a while...they seem to wanna talk during my tunes. That would be disappointing.  From the pictures you'd posted I'd just assumed there was a speaker behind that little round disk with the bar and shield emblem on it.

Seems a bit of a weak component design and engineering to design a system to allow someone a fixed, clean, no-exposed-wire kind of mount and then still force them to have to dangle a wire down across the face of the instruments to plug in to the front of the radio.

OK Bill, you got to use this on your way to and from the beach this past weekend in your Harley Davidson truck. What say you on how it works?  Thanks for the update.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Beach????

[feel free to skip this reply and move to the next!]

Let's see, Arrived Norfolk at 1330 Friday, went to relative's house.  At 1500, picked up Nieces at school, went back to house, went to dinner, went back to hotel (Downtown Norfolk Courtyard) with Nieces so they could have a "Slumber Party" tried to sleep.

Saturday, went to relatives house again, then to Bass Pro Shops and Williamsburg with one Niece then back to house to meet others and go to Grate Steak for Dinner.  Went back to Hotel and slept.

Sunday Went to Church, one niece's first communion and the reason we gave up a beautiful weekend.  90 minute mass then to brunch.  After brunch, took my Father in Law and Nieces to the Norfolk Tides Baseball game.  After game, finally we were on our own and found a place to have a few beers.  Then went to Star Wars, slept got up at 0430 to  head home.

Dropped Anne off at the Newark Airport Marriott, she's flyin' to Moncton, NB CA.  Stopped at my Parents house in CT and then a Friend's.  Finally got home at 1930 Monday evening.

Now, As for the GPS:

1.  Make sure you load the maps before you go...base map is OK, but you cannot use it to find the nearest bar without the detailed maps.  (Doh!)

2.  Re-calculates route  too soon, once when at the intersection of the Garden State Parkway and the NJ Turnpike, Heading North on the Pike, it thought I was on the GSP and recalculated the route...once it realized the error of it's ways, it corrected.

3.  The voice prompt is worse than having my wife telling me directions...always telling me I am off course...I know the route better than the unit!  I drive it at least twice a year.

I do have positive comments also...

1.  The recalculating does do a good job...just too often ;)

2.  Small size is a plus on a bike, easy to remove.

3.  Easy to use buttons but not with winter gloves, only thin ones.

4.  Intuitive menus

Hi Bill, glad to read that you've finally gotten to play with the GPS a bit.  Given what you've seen so far is the screen display intuitive enough that you'd just use it without the audio?

Yes, it is.  There are big (relative) arrows overlaying the map and there is text on the top of the screen.

As for the re-calculating too often, I bet that is because I only had the basmap and not the detail maps loaded.

Need more testing...just wish I had more time to ride right now!

That's a good thought Bill.  The lower the data resolution the wider the points it'll have to calclulate from and the more "willing" it'll be to do it.  The 2620 you saw on mine is better behaved but it's got all the data loaded to begin with.  Bet your Quest will be much happier when you load it up.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
