Gas cap trim ring problems?
« on: June 13, 2008, 03:42:52 PM »

I am on my second gas cap on a bike I purchased on 3/23.  The trim ring keeps coming off.  Then I noticed that I can pull off the gas cap and I can see the springs and all of the insides. Gotta have this checked with my 1000 mi. service.  Maybe the fuel is removing the glue that holds the trim ring in place?  Weird.  Never heard of a problem with a gas cap before.

Welcome to the site!

I think I've heard of this a couple times, although I haven't had the same problem myself.

I did have to have one flush gas cap replaced after the thing got stuck.  Got it pried loose, ordered the new one under warranty, rode to Florida for about 3 weeks with it in the "up" position, came home & got my new cap.

I think I heard about the trim ring issue when I was getting the paperwork done for the new cap.

Anyway, I hope this is the worst problem you have with your bike - my guess is that the surface isn't sufficiently cleaned with those alcohol swatches to get good adhesion from the glue.

Welcome!

Yeah, I am thrilled with this bike.  I am also thrilled with this website.  It is so nice to be able to get a response from someone that knows the motorcycle.  I appreciate your response.

No problems with mine.
and I also had the flush mount gauge and cap on my '06 Deuce, and never had a problem with the gas cap trim ring....

but I'm also very careful when I put gas in the bike to not let the pump nozzle rest on the trim ring.

My gas lid just fell apart this weekend????  The rubber gasket, which appears to around the base of the cap, was about a 1/2 inch to big and would not stay on so I snap the piece of  chit back together and rode on.  I'll be going to the dealer, for yet another issue.

Took a trip to Florida. I think the heat had something to do with my gas cap ring coming off, but I just stuck it back on and it stayed

well there u go i have also joined the  trim ring fell off club,

i had just filled up at the gas station 2wards the end of a 3000km trip, about to screw the cap back on when i noticed the ring looked loose
i had previously had the tank replaced ugt so i guess my stealer removed the origanal  trim ring and fitted it to the new tank, seems to have had a ring of double sided tape and then 5 spots of silikon adhesive holding it in place, i^m gonna stick it back on my self

I had the same problem on my '07 SERK. It just gets loose and has to be glued back on. That's what the dealer did. So far it works for me.

Ride safely,

My dealer says it is happening because I overfill the tank and the fumes just cause it to come off.  Let's see... gas cap/gas fumes. Who woulda thought?  Sort of like porous grout being used in a shower.

My trim ring is fine, but the spring and guts in the cap just shot apart like one of those snake in a can gags.Of course I was 600 miles from home, and no one stocks one of these caps.Oh,and I got the "we never seen that happen" comment. ???
