I know this sounds nuts, but turn the switch on and off about 6 times and see what happens

That is a much better solution than my piece of tape over the light!

Have been told the same thing BB.  That some certain number of on-off cycles clears historical codes.  Can't say I ever paid much attention to it though.  If I knew there was one for which the problem was either false or fixed always just knew that after riding for a few days the code would eventually clear and go away after I started and stopped enough times.  I like lazy solutions that actually work and don't hurt anything.

Funny you should say that Don. Given the propensity of the FLH ignition switch to chit the bed over time, I've always been leery of excessive toggling of it. My thought process was on the same lines as yours. If doing this clears it then after I've switched the switched to go someone the requisite number of times, it'll clear itself. Fuzzy seemed in a hurry though so I offered up the hurry-up solution    :)

Basically my engine light comes on when getting up to highway speed. Particually between 3rd and forth gear. When I slow down to 60 and put it in 5th gear the light cancels itself out and then I can get back up to 70s and the light will not come on. This happened last week for the first time. I took it home and checked the oil, it was a little low so I topped it off and and thought this would cure it. It did'nt. Also I 've noticed when I start it,  the engine light comes back on for a few seconds and then shut off . I've never noticed that before either. I have talked to the speed shop guy that recently installed my PC and V&H bigshot true duals. When I picked the bike up from him two weeks ago there were'nt any issues. When I called this morning and told him about it he did'nt seem to concerned. I have an appointment with him next week to put it on the diagnostic .He seems to think it's a ECM issue, a code that has to be cleared but we won't no that untill next week. Any thoughts........ comments? :nixweiss:
i had the same problems . the ecm is bad , i just went threw all this , have a nice day

Well I just got the bike back, the mechanic told me it was a low octane problem. He reset the ECM and all is well. I also had the V & H quiet baffles installed. I'm little disappointed but at least I can hear the radio. I thought I was done but he just told me I need a new tire. This spending money stuff sucks, especially if there is no chrome involved. Thanks to all. :orange: :orange: :orange:

Huh?  Did you ask him where the octane sensor was?

Could be low octane caused detonation and the knock sensor picked that up?  But didn't know it could turn on the check engine light.   :nixweiss:

Does the ECM have an input for a knock sensor?
or better yet, do the bikes have a knock sensor?
I do not know.......you would think that they might?

Yes, there is a "knock sensor" of sorts, it's an integral part of the Delphi ignition.  No separate sensor, however, and there is no code for "knock".  Thus 2lane's comment, since knock doesn't set a code the mechanics comment is suspect at best.

Too true Jerry.  Even if the ion sensor system were suggesting detonation that wouldn't account for all the original problems described.  It unfortunately sounds like an example of a lazy description given to pacify an owner.  Who knows what they actually found or fixed; if anything?

Jerry

I was at the local shop this morning to pick up an ordered part Jerry.  While there was standing next to a shop employee explaining to a bike owner why he (the wrench) had just taken out the owner's all but new spark plugs and replaced them with HD branded plugs during his now-not-free 1000 mile service.  It seems Harley's plugs are the only ones out there with the ability to work correctly doing their detonation sensing.  No other manufacturer, it was explained, does this.

Don't forget the H-D motor, tranny, & primary fluids.  Only ones that will work with a Harley. :2vrolijk_21:
