Engine Light Comming on at speeds between 65 to 75
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:49:13 AM »

Basically my engine light comes on when getting up to highway speed. Particually between 3rd and forth gear. When I slow down to 60 and put it in 5th gear the light cancels itself out and then I can get back up to 70s and the light will not come on. This happened last week for the first time. I took it home and checked the oil, it was a little low so I topped it off and and thought this would cure it. It did'nt. Also I 've noticed when I start it,  the engine light comes back on for a few seconds and then shut off . I've never noticed that before either. I have talked to the speed shop guy that recently installed my PC and V&H bigshot true duals. When I picked the bike up from him two weeks ago there were'nt any issues. When I called this morning and told him about it he did'nt seem to concerned. I have an appointment with him next week to put it on the diagnostic .He seems to think it's a ECM issue, a code that has to be cleared but we won't no that untill next week. Any thoughts........ comments? :nixweiss:

How many miles on your bike? Are you still running chain driven cams? Have you had the tensioners checked?

That happened on my last bike about a month after I installed a power commander. Took it back to the tuner & he cleared it.

Thanks Muff, as for mileage 18,000. Just barely broken in. At what mileage should I start worrying about cam tensioners?

yes, the entire cam plate needs to be removed to inspect the inner tensioner. this is why many people will remover the chain setup and go with gear drive cams.

Well I'll see what he says. Other than it blowing up on me, are there any symptoms I should be wary of? :nixweiss:

a trained ear may hear something down there. the problem is as the tensioners begin to fall apart the material may cause damage to the oil pump of get stuck in an oil passage

Any thoughts........ comments? :nixweiss:

I know this sounds nuts, but turn the switch on and off about 6 times and see what happens

I replaced mine on my 04 at 30000kms(18,000 miles) They were worn out & I replaced with gear drive. THE MUFFMAN

Check the plugs for fouling. The ECM knows when the engine isnt firing right under a load.
