Goldwinger down
« on: July 02, 2008, 11:39:48 AM »

My brother just called to tell me a high school acquiantance from my home town was killed this week on his new Goldwing.  He bought the bike from a Honda dealer in Chattanooga and was on his way home to Cullman, Ala (my home town) when he rounded the entrance ramp to I 65 from I 565 (I think) in Huntsville.  He apparantly approached the sharply curved ramp too fast and could not execute the turn.  He went off the ramp and was killed.
If that is not bad enough his wife was following behind him in their car (she drove him to Chat to pick up the new bike) and saw it all happen.  My brother thinks he was a novice rider.  Too bad for sure.   :(

damn, what a tragedy.  Better too slow than too fast in a sharp curve.

That really is a shame. Govt's are going to have to wake up & start mandatory testing to ANYONE who can't produce proof of owning of a motorcycle within a five year period prior . There are unfortunately many people who have been out of it for 10,15, or even 20 years and then hopping on these 800lb + bikes with no business doing so. THE MUFFMAN

Here the article in today's Cullman paper

By Patrick McCreless

PATRICKM@CULLMANTIMES.COM

A Cullman man was killed in Limestone County Monday after he flipped off his motorcycle from an Interstate 65 ramp and fell 20 feet to the ground.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West pronounced Cranford Lee Allen, 57 dead at the scene at approximately 4:40 p.m.

“He died from blunt force trauma,” West said. “Death was instantaneous.”

According to Alabama State Trooper reports, the accident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. at the southbound Interstate 65 on-ramp from Interstate 565. Allen was wearing a helmet and was the only person involved in the crash.

“He was coming off of the ramp, lost control of the motorcycle, hit the guard rail and was ejected from the motorcycle,” West said.

West noted that Allen had bought the motorcycle about an hour before the crash and that his wife was following behind him in another vehicle.

The case is still under investigation.

Funeral services for Allen will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cullman Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Cullman City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Very sad to story.

Bad enough when we take to the road knowing the potential dangers but for a spouse to be there is horrifying.

Physics many times does not give a second chance-the rider safety training for new riders should be at least a 15 minute video with 15 minutes of actual instructionn to be able to leave the dealership. Sincere sympathy to the family.

This is very sad indeed. A year ago, my wife went down doing about 45-50 mph. Broke her lower leg. I was infront so I did not see, thankfully. If I would have seen this, It would have changed my attitude. Most likely would have quit riding. Hope His family can recover from this someday. I still worry about my wife when we are riding.
