My 11 year old daughter just recently starting riding with me and she loves it so far. (but not nearly as much as her dad loves her riding with him, lol) However she has complained about her right foot getting to hot when we ride and I am worried that if I do not change something she may lose interest in riding. I have an 07 SERK with Fat Cat 2 in 1. I read the recent posts on changing to true duals or duals with the crossover and was considering one of these as a means of reducing the heat. I know if I make any changes I will be giving up some performance but it is more important to me for my daughter to ride and be comfortable. With my Fat Cat's I cannot use the rjk? heat shields that I bought because the pipes extend so far out  on the right side.  (don't know if the Kuryakyn or HD shields would fit with the Fat Cats) I was considering going back to stock headers (with crossover) and adding the vance and hines monster ovals which would allow me to use the heat shields, or at least I think it would.   Mentioned changing from my Fat Cats to true duals or duals with crossover to  a HD mechanic today and he said he thought all I would be doing was transferring the heat from the right to the left side. Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

You might consider exhaust heat wrap near her foot.  2" x 15' is about $13 at the local short track race shop, Lefthanders Chassis...  I have installed some on my D&D's to save my inner lower leg...  It works well...

Thanks for the tip. May be worth trying and it sure beats that cost of a new exhaust system.

I've not noticed an over-hot problem with the FatCats on either the SEEG or the SERG.  Expected heat yes.  But nothing close to the extent that would seem unusual or worth doing anything to mitigate it.  Difference in tune maybe?

In any case, if you swapped the 2-1s for true duals (as one option) you might then find the wee passenger trading a right side issue for a left side.  Left side on standard pipes with a crossover never gets terribly hot.  ON true duals it can though.  And that one is a lot closer to the inner leg than the right is to the foot.

I have not noticed an over hot problem either.  No radiant heat at all, actually.  I wrapped a section of pipe with heat wrap to prevent the dreaded hot pipe vs. skin burn on my inside lower leg.  I occasionally do a quick run to the store or somewhere in shorts, and have lived long enough to know touching leg to pipe is not desireable...   :'(

If you still have the stock passenger pegs what about switching to floorboards with the 360-degree adjustable mounts?  You can rotate them so they are higher.  I don't know where that pipe sits in relation to the existing mount, but with an eleven year-old higher up may be better all around.

I was never a local to the store bike user.  At least not often.  This year have been doing it a lot more though.  Bikes getting much more in town traffic.  Surprising myself how often I hop on in shorts.  Will no doubt cook some meat soon enough.

I have the "man-cave" motorcycle garage out back, and the "attached to the house full of gardening supplies and vehicles" garage up front.  If the bike ends up in the house garage, I ride it almost everywhere I go (weather permitting), because it is just jump on it and go.  When it is in the motorcycle garage, it is a bigger effort to ride due to more doors and gates and such.  So, it sees less running around doing errands riding duty when it is in the motorcycle garage...  If I could only convice my wife to park her car and move her "stuff" out back and allow me to move my bike garage up front.... but I don't think that is happening anytime soon....   :nixweiss:   :(

Whenever you can do without the motorcycle for a period of time send your headpipe and have it Jet Hot Coated. It's a ceramic coating for the inside and outside of the pipe. It greatly reduces radiant heat.

Can't gain sympathy for the digit?  It's got to make things a little out of balance and be so painful to walk with?  You need the bike closer.   It's a health thing.

Too true.  And working all the gates and doors is use that can cause pain.  Pain leads to more meds.  Meds that would be unnecessary without having to work all the extra gates and doors.  Meds and driving or riding is so terribly unsafe.  So it's not just a health (and compassion) issue keeping the bike in the attached garage.  It's a safety issue too.

Now what are the failure modes to this approach???  Gotta think of how the female mind can turn this around and punish me with it...  :-*

You can get ceramic coating for about $150, the only thing you'll have to do is clean it off the pipes where the joints slip together. It has a satin finish, but with the heat shields on you can hardly see the pipes anyway.

That's simple.  When she figures out what's going on she beats you with a stick.
