Torquing the cam and crank bolts, using the primary chain "lock" to jam the gears.

So - the operation was a success and the bike runs great. Downloaded a map we got from Jim and you could hear the bike change in the way it was running as the map downloaded - cool.

By far the hardest part was dealing with the exhaust heat shields.

Oil pressure is about the same as mine at idle, about 10psi but at cruise speed it is around 45 (interpolating the gauge) which is about 15psi more then mine.

Idles nice, throttle response is snappy and the gears whir just enough to let you know something ain't stock.

New platinum plugs too.

Tomorrow we do the hydraulic primary chain tensioner and change the oil again.

So, we had our box of stuff today.

This picture shows the tool I made from a socket to knock the roll pin out holding the oil pressure spring in. This was before talking to Jim and finding out the "no special tool" method.

why did you have to do this?

Gears pressed onto cams, bearings pressed into cam plate, cams pressed into bearings.

No pictures of this as we had to run to my buddies shop to use the press.

standard press works?  I don't own one, but have been needing to get a small press for all the other crap I end up wanting it for.

What are the symptoms of the run out being excessive? i will ask to have it checked anyway when I get enhanced.

Nice cam plate! Duane, question, if there is to much back lash is there any adjustment that can be made?

I didn't really.

I was looking at the spring location, which is directly to the left of the socket in this picture and behind the roll pin at the arrow.

I was figuring out a way to get the pin out without launching the spring or buggering up the plate.
I noticed the Fueling Tool in the brochure while I was scratching my head and figured "I can make that"

Turns out the Fueling tool lists for for $50 anyway - that ain't gonna happen.

Not sure what you mean by standard. I was using a typical hydraulic press. Looked similar to the one pictured below, but ours is a bit older and much better. Like I said I forgot to bring the camera to the shop  :nixweiss: I don't particularly care for the press below, the upper beam tends to move around a bit.
Our press has a hydraulic ram bolted to the the upper beam and is fixed. The nose of the ram has a star shaped wheel to make ram length adjustments up to about 6 inches. The press below can get "sloppy" if you are not careful.

There is quite a bit of resistance pressing the gears on the cams and then pressing the cams into the bearings (after pressing the bearings into the plate).

When you do it, take note that there most likely will be shavings from the pressing the need to be cleaned out.

I guess that will depend on the application.

The .000 to .003" run out tolerance is for the installation of gear drives. Any more then that and gear drives are not recommended. The chains will take up the slop.

I think HD's tolerance is as high as .010".

Much more then that and the crank end will wipe out the cam plate bushing and probably the oil pump, which "sits" on the oil pump crankshaft.

i will ask to have it checked anyway when I get enhanced.

Having this checked is part of the procedure of installing the gear drives.

Too much or too little backlash is adjustable.

You remove the gears you just pressed on with tools maybe you didn't plan on having in advance and then "order" over or undersized gears and let the bike sit while you wait for the parts to come in  :(

More than .003" and you can mash the gears and take the whole motor out! Check the runout before considering gear drive! HD spec was bumped to .012"!!! :nixweiss:
