Lost hard bag
« on: August 04, 2008, 11:39:06 PM »

 >:( >:( Has anyone had problems with quick release pins on their hard bags? :'( :'( I had to have a defective pin replaced within the first 1000 miles. I now have 5000 miles and this weekend I had a bag fall of while on a 250 mile jaunt. Trashed for sure. I don't know if it will be covered under warranty but I know that to replace my anniversary painted bag won't be cheap.

This is my second Ultra and I did not have trouble like this on the 06. Please let me know if you have had similar problems.

Have seen the ends of the pins twist and even break.  But never both at the same time so a bag was lost though.  Really sorry for the loss.  Like you would really doubt a warranty claim would be honored.  Too easy for them to say "never had it on it right" or "over-twisted the pins."

Was the recovered and of any use at all?  At least the hardware?  Or total loss?

After dodging traffic I was able to recover it. Bad case of road rash to lower and lid. Latch is a lost cause. Both pins were still inside and both were spread.

I had to adjust the mounting points on mine to get them to fit right.  Was a real PITA, but well worth the time and effort in the end.
Still, the eternal obsessive, I find myself reaching back to make sure they're still there............even when Renea is riding with me.  Sickness.

Any chance some dink tech at the dealership cinched them up too tight after doing some service?  Any I've ever twisted I knew when it was done (and couldn't really blame the pins).

I am thinkingt of removing the pins and replacing them with J nuts and bolts. It really isn't that much trouble removing a couple of bolts to remove them. Atleast I know they won't fall the f*(k off.

Now that is a great idea.

I had them off while cleaning days before. They felt correct when I reinstalled and traveled over 60 mile after that. I do travel 5 miles of rough dirt road in and out of my house on a daily basis and checked them before I left on my jaunt. They were secure.

I know a couple of guys that do that as a mini-security add-on.  They figure someone is less likely to have a wrench in their pocket to steal a saddelbag when they'd only ever expect to find the pins in there.

Be sure and use either a nylock nut or pal-nut it.  You'd not want to pull it so tight that holding the nut solid would jeopardize the bag at all.

On my 07 CVO, i had a bag lose both retainer fasteners and the only thing that saved the bag from road rash and worse was the wire harness for the locks. I have had problems with fasteners on my current 2008 Ultra, but only one side not both. Now thinking of the wire harness life safer, it sure wouldn't be hard to set up some type of safety strap to hold the bags if both went such as the wire harness successfully did..

I think it has somehow to do with the liner inside the bags. They seem to be in the way of the fastener, and you can not pull them tight as needed.

That liner hasn't been a factor for me, since the holes are so big.  I'm really thinking some type of nut/threaded insert attached/tack welded/soldered/otherwise bonded to the inside of the saddlebag mounts would serve the purpose.  Couple that with a threaded bail stud, and as it was in the beginning, no tools required to remove/reinstall saddlebags, which would be great on the road................and pretty much eliminate the PITA factor everytime the Bitubos need adjusting.............or for whatever other reason the bags need to come off.

What about a clevis pin?  I think that is what they are called, straight on one side, ring with decreasing "humps" on the other side?  You would need a flat headed bolt, drill a hole just inside the bag and the pin would go through that?
