Recall Heads are they worth polishing?
« on: August 23, 2008, 10:34:20 AM »

Since the wrench has to take things apart it strikes me the savings on labor may just about cover a little machine work to the new heads and adding a cam that actually stays on it's feet past 4200 rpm. Spoke to hd-Dude and he has some good reccomendations. Before I move forward has anyone done anything like this with the 08 110? Hoist be nice when you pipe up  :)

Thanks brothers

Capo,

What cam do you have in mind?  Are you thinking about going gear-drive when you do the cam change?
I have thought about spending a few extra $$$ when I have mine in and will be interested in the suggestions too.

LReb,
Jim has a few recommendations for the cam Wood W6 or a SE upgrade and I am calling him this morning at the shop for more discussion. The head work may actually not be worth the $ since the cam recs aren't so wild and I'll know more later.

OK, I'll try and be nice. This is pretty simple and basic actually. Make sure you work with someone that has a "package" developed for this motor. Don't just go out and get headwork done somewhere, then grab a cam you think you like, etc. It's very important that this chit be designed to work together. The combination is very important. So yes, I'd do headwork and cams now while it's apart. That is if it's a properly designed package, the dealer has a clue on how to build a motor, and if the bottom end is decent. And not HD's idea of decent at .012" runout!!! So do it smart and don't rely on the dealer to select your components. Work with a competent engine designer/builder! ;)

Capo,

I am currently testing driving a new cam grind for the 110's.   I asked Wes at Cycle Rama to bring the power band down from 3000-3200 to start more aggressively at 2000 rpm and run at least 3000 rpm's.   I believe he has delivered on my request although with all the rain haven't been able to give it a full field test yet,  I am hoping to do a side by side comparision with another bike next weekend.   Thus far I am much happier with this cam over  HD 255 or the HD 251 cam, Freedom YB14SEC-07 or the zippers 575 and even the CR595 in a 110.  The 595 came in later than I wanted by about a 1000 rpm's.   In my opinion based on several cam comparisions this is by far the best cam I have tried in the bike, although it has not been back to the dyno for a final tune the butt dyno has given the thumbs up.

As others have already said, I would echo their comments and tell you to consider this on your 08, TTS, 58mm Throttlebody, headwork and Cam by a competent head guy giving you a complete package.

Best or luck with whatever you decide and please post your results either way.

Thanks,

I have to agree with Hoist. Having to replace my first engine on the 07 at 7100 miles, tells anyone that MoCo is selling the idea, not the quality of riding.
Remember this, when polishing heads on the intake side, the mixture isn't as fine as it should be and you would be burning un-necessary fuel for power and economy. :2vrolijk_21:

What headwork is done on the motor you are running these cams in?

5 angle valve job, port polish and flow, and springs.   I did not have him shave them for compression though.  For sake of comparison what did you have done to yours  ::)

much the same...

5 angle valve job, port, polish, cc'd, flowed, springs - cut for 10:1 CR...  9.5 CR with cams...

So are you saying Wes produced a cam with specs as per your request?
Or was this a cam Wes designed that just happened to be what you were looking for?
Just wondering?
May want to put one of those "Unbalanced designed and CycleRama built cams in my 09.
Very interesting!
Let me send Wes or Pammy an email asking them about the Harry designed cam and when it will be available.
Maybe I can get the Unbalanced discount!

If you are thinking about any motor upgrades at all in the near future and the heads are off the bike DO IT NOW!!!!!!

I don't care about all of the other BS being thrown around. It will be money well spent for a later project. But remember this. DON'T GO OUT AND SPEND THE MONEY TO DO A SET OF STAGE 4 HEADS! That will be a waste of money. When you are ready for a set of stage 4 you are ready for a new lower end! Mild head work to match any cam of your choice to match your riding and get it done. I would always spend the little bit of cash to have the heads shaved when they are off. Free power on the top all day long.

Harry after reading your post about a cam coming in 1000 RPM toooo late. I would call BS on that. Just ride the damn thing!!!!! The money you spend on cam changes could of bought me a new CVO :orange: :orange: :orange: :orange: :orange:

Tell Pammy and Wes THE DAWG said hey!!!!!
