Type of oil vs. warranty?
« on: August 27, 2008, 07:21:45 AM »

Greetings and Peace to All my CVO brothers & sisters!

I'm slated to get a new orange/black SERG right after the first of the year, trading in our FLHRSEI2 & FXSTDSE on it.

We broke our two '03 CVO's in with regular fossil oils, then switched to SYN3 right after it came out at about 1500 miles. I've never really been confident with the SYN3 and always questioned it, especially in the tranny, but never changed back as - in spite of my concerns - there's never been any engine/tranny problems on either bike.

New CVO bikes are shipped out now with SYN3 already in them. What would happen if I had the dealer change the SYN3 out to either fossil oils OR preferably Redline synthetic engine oil and their Shockproof tranny fluid (great stuff - really quiets down the gear shifting!) before I even ride the bike out of the dealership the first time next Spring? Would I void the warranty?

I am NOT confident nor happy about breaking in my new 110" engine with SYN3 and suspect this could be part of the root problem experienced with the earlier 110" motors... :nixweiss: What do you think?

I appreciate all responses! Thanks - ride safe, enjoy life while you can, and God bless... :)

In regards to warranty issues changing the fluids to one that is equal to or better then manufacturers specs will not void it. See here for details on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

There is no reason to waste the oil the bike comes with.  Since you're going to dump all the fluids at 500-1000 miles anyway, just wait and change to your preferred brands at the first service.  SYN-3, while not the best oil available, is still superior to dino oil on a hot running air cooled engine.

Dino oil is not necessary for break-in.  I've broken in cars and bikes with synthetics with zero issues, and many vehicles now come from the factory with synthetics, including names like Porsche, BMW, Corvette, plus the regular folks like Ford.  Put the wives tales and propaganda about synthetics behind you and step into the light.

BTW, your comment about the motor oil in the transmission is on target.  While the SYN-3 will work, a real gear oil will work much better.  The trans will be quieter and smoother.

I whole heartily agree with both previous posts. Instead of changing out from Syn3 immediately for the break-in, wait for the first change over. BUT-definitely remap immediately, as the air/fuel ratio is one of the biggest problems with the "hot running" issue. Talk to your tech/mechanic as to what type of air/fuel tune he recommends. Best of luck on the new ride!
