Thank you all for your support and your replies. I did go ahead today and buy an 09 red hot sunglow FLHR with a 103 with the 255 cams, chrome front end, combo speedo tach, etc.. etc.. etc... I will be sorry and relieved at the same time to see the CVO go... Just remember:

Like a fog horn, a train whistle or a Jerry Garcia guitar riff
The sound of a Harley is unmistakable and unduplicated

WTH did you put those crappy 255 cams in that thing for? I was with ya til you said that! Good luck, but don't complain about the heat. You're asking for more heat instead of less! You'll have Jerry turning over in his grave for that one! ;)

What he meant:

Hey, if you just bought it and still have time you might rethink those cams.  255s might give you some heat you don't want.  FTH!!

HeHe!!! Thanks Don, that's the diplomats way of saying it! ;D ;D ;D

Check with the gurus that know the 103. Not sure what SE cam works well with that motor. These guys all love the Freedom Cycle or Zippers 575's. The SE 251's work great on a 110, but I've no experience with them on a 103. Similar lift though, but I've not compared specs. Might be OK on the 103, but check with others that have first hand experience first. But the 255 is the stock EPA cam on the 110's! Not a good cam in that motor and it seems it would do worse on a 103, even though HD uses it on cop bikes! It's the best EPA cam they got. Big deal, that means nothing to me! Not breaking your balls here man. Quite the contrary. Trying to save you some grief. ;) :2vrolijk_21:

Howie, he's doing an 09.  96" upgrade to a 103" rather than the stroked 88" we all know and love.  Those 575 or Yuill brothers cams won't be the ideal choice with his head package that they were on the old 103s.

Same bore and stroke Don, but don't know what these '09 heads are like. They both use a 3/8" leg. More than that I don't know.  That's why he needs to talk to an experienced engine guy who knows how they differ, and what would work well. Maybe some better heads should go with this build! But I can't recommend a cam for a 96"/103" motor. I've zero experience with it. ;)

Yeah, heads and cams.  He's already going from a 96 to a 103.  So we might as well send him to Axtell.  Wonder how much of his money we can spend help him wisely invest in his motor :huepfenlol2: ?

Remember, he may be restricted to what the HD dealer will put in to complete deal. It is not the same as going to an engine builder and ordering the perfect 103 motor. The HD dealer will probably only install HD components not different lifters, cams, and other good stuff.

Nothing left to do but  :) :) :)
Hoist your a New Yorker - I am originally from Jersey - I do not remember what exit so don't ask -I can take the heat... grew up with, it expect it, love it!!!
I hear your advice. I may be over a barrel for now (I can not leave stuff alone either - Ok maybe not to your extent but.....) the EPA/CARB stuff has my local dealer staying safe. Changes to the cams/heads etc... will be a function of just how hot is it (it was soo hot _____) what the performance is like, and how much I continue to hang out here and listen to all of you crazy motor heads. I will talk to the mechanic and the parts guy about other harley cams though....

here's a chart from my '05 road king 103, screamin eagle performance heads (now called mcr) heads, se251 cams, bassani roadrage 2 into 1 exhaust, stock throttle body...harley doesn't really have a good cam for a 103 with stock heads...they usually are about 9.8 compression...too much for 204's and not enough for 211's...now if they're willing to use the 10.25 pistons, the 251's would be ok with stock heads...and better with mild porting including 1.9" intake valves
