For me, anytime a shaft is replaced (in this case the cam end shaft), the bearing that carries it should be replaced with it. And there are better cam bearings than what HD uses stock. The Torrington. ;)

O.k. all this sounds very well in-line with what I was expecting to do...
Howie, I know you've had great success with the Axtell Jugs...since I would be going with the 10.5:1 along with these upgrades, is this the recommended jug to "refit" the bike with, especially considering the propensity for problems with the stock jugs? To further "pick your brain", if I stay with stock and just replace the pistons, would the stock heads need work? I am just learning 'bout upgrading, come from an automotive background and want to make sure I do it right the first time-in stages of course due to funding being critically low at this juncture...thanks!

If ya can afford the jugs, do em. The Axtell's are night and day above HD's quality. And a lil headwork is always good. Porting and flowing will make the engine more efficient and insure each cylinder is optimized for the same combustion characteristics. ;)

How much are the cylinders?
If you want to go bigger will the cases take the increase?
If you go that far I assume might as well get the crank balanced and trued?
The head work is a given!

Yea, I was going to stay away from the crank for right now, but will definitely be doing it later..., replace o.e. bearing with Timken upgrade would definitely help too...

I think around $900 for the Axtells. There's limits to these cases. Don't know how big I'd go with em. If I wanted a much bigger bore, I'd prolly look at the Jim's instead of rebuilding this engine. If ya do the bottom end, a Timken and a REAL crank is a must! ;)

You raise a very valid point with this post. My personal opinion is that if you really want to get into the performance side of things, you're far far better off simply buying a Jim's 131 and swapping out motors than to tear apart the H-D 110 and try to get the same level of performance. I use myself as a guage. I cannot tear down a motor and rebuild it, but I can for sure pull one out and put another one in. That's about 6 hours labor saved right there. So with reasonable mechanical skills (say a 6 out of a possible 10) one could buy the Jim's and do the swap themselves.

And to think this all started talking about a simple cam swap.  LOL

I paid $699.99 for my Axtell cylinders.

If you go bigger then 4", you need to bore the cases.

If you bore the cases, you may as well have the crank done at the same time.

I was going to respond to this before dinner but didn't have the time. I was going to ask, why are we talking about Axtell cylinders, push & pull rods, lifters, and gaskets. This was supposed to be a simple cam swap... cheap, plain, and simple.

Then Oilcan nailed it:

again must chime in and say IMO, nothing wrong with moco 110 cylinders...eliminate the two destructive issues: heat and excessive compression, you're golden...9k miles on mine and zero leaks

We do not have excessive compression from the factory...in fact, the factory 110 setup could use a little extra...jmho
