Wait modem breath!  You're forgetting the one in the red bike ATE ITSELF.  The first gearset was about $1600 all done.  The second was only $1300 though.  Throw in a few extra gaskets and oil for a nice round $3k.  There's also probably $350-400 worth of tools.  So... oh... round it up to $3500.  No doubt have another $1600-1800 in the doing it to the SERG.  So once again round it all up to $5500.

You said a nickel per mile?  So a nickel divided by $5500 equals... ooops, 110,000 miles.  And we all know that anything to do with 110 leaks like a tramp steamer carrying fuel oil.  So these things will (I guess :nixweiss: ) just keep leaking money forever... :-\

See what I mean about leaving things stock :nixweiss:

Once you start screwing around and make changes to these finely engineered machines......it never stops :coolblue:

So go out and spend $5500 more and take her up to a buck twenty.....feel the wobble......kiss your azz goodby...........hell just give me the $5500 so I can go out and ride 55mph and take in all the scenery that I decided to do with my bone stock 04SEEG :coolblue:

Well, the collective wisdom so far seems to be a loud "don't do it" which is why I participate in forums like these. I've saved tons of money (not really saved, just spent elsewhere) by listening to those with experience steer me away from things I thought I should do. Fortunately, I didn't listen to those with experience that were saying "don't buy a Harley"!

So, you all know what this means - MORE CHROME!, or perhaps those custom tan saddlebags I've been looking at. Anyone have any experience with Aligator Bob?

Thanks a lot for the advice! I'll be back with more rookie questions soon!

Brian you be fibbing again Bone stock 04 SEEG.   ::)     Last I heard the bike was running better than it ever has     :nixweiss:

Anywho ...

I have the baker OD6 R2 and it has been rebuilt 4 times now and after another 4k miles the main shaft has play in again.   Baker says they can help resolve it, but I sent the tranny case complete to them 2 times with the same results.   This is the last time I am going to try to fix it before I yank it out.   Despite the problems, Baker has gone out of their way in regards to customer service and that is the only reason I am willing to give it one more go.   I know other people with the Baker Tranny's that run smooth as butter and shift great, and I look forward to hopefully having the same result especially since I have 3 grand in the tranny plus plus plus.

The Screaming Eagle 6 speed has worked Flawlessly thus far in Michelle's bike (04 SEEG Pumpkin) and she has over 15k miles on it and it hasnt missed a beat.   Since we do a fair amount of highway driving she prefers it to the stock 5 speed that was in the bike.  We typically run 70 - 85 mph on the highway and she likes the drop in the rpm's.

Guess the decision here is depending on what type of driving you do and the rpm's you typically turn will decide whether you choose to upgrade to a 6 speed or not.   Even with all the known faults and considerations TwoLane is still planning on upgrading the SERG,

I will most likely put a 6 Screaming Eagle 6 Speed into the 05 Cherry as well.

Look, guys, I probably abuse a motorsickle as much or more than anybody here.  Not to imply I am the master of abuse, just stating a fact.  I put the 6-speed Harley gearing in Ol' Maudie back in '04, to add some life to my biga$$ed Motor.  Mainshaft failed early on, (which BTW I think is a direct result of synthetic oil), but since has been bullet-proof.  No worries.  It may fail tomorrow, but so far has been trouble free.  Although I am constantly looking for 7th, I think the HD 6 sp. is light years ahead of the Baker.  ;) JMHO.  Later--HUBBARD

I was perfectly happy with the 5 speed in the SEEG, until I adopted Elvis from BB. After a very short time I had to get the Baker DD6 for the nana and I love it. Of course I rarely use that bike around town, with 3 bikes I find I am mostly using that bike for the road. I will say all three now have 6 speeds and I wouldn't leave home without it. $2,000. plus is quite a pain but if your not willing to shell it out, don't try a bike out on a highway that has one. Just MHO.

Well trying to get this thread back on track. Somebody asked about putting a 6 speed in their SE. Hell we all help each other out in spending our hard earned cash, so I say JUST DO ITT!!!!! Go ahead and buy a SE 6 speed. I have both a baker and a HD unit. I actually like the HD unit best!!!!!

Hey Carl, care to expound?    :jack:

Again, GH, this is just Ol' Hub's opinion.  While I understand the purpose of synthetic oil is to reduce heat and prolong component life, I only partially agree with the reduced heat theory, and totally disagree with the prolonged component life.  Hot synthetic oil is thinner than water, and leaves no oil base on gears.  More than not will disagree with me here, but that's my Ol' School belief.  I've seen it fail in time from Commercial Class 8 Diesel Engines, all the way down to my little 6-speed.  No synthetic for me.  Later--HUBBARD
