CUSE3 Problems and the Stealer
« on: September 10, 2008, 02:54:16 PM »

OK so I take my CUSE3 in because my heated grips quit working, hey it's cold here in WI.  So I make a list for the dealer of items that will need to be addressed in the near future, note his responses in RED and my response/questions back.

•   Head – Recall   Will be scheduled at a future time after he completes his SE customer's first.  I bought my scooter out of state.  OK, as long as I can have this done before Spring.

•   Fuel Filter Basket – Recall   The fuel filter basket in the bike is fine.  It's not cracked.   Cycle delivery was 12-7-07, I received notice to have it replaced.  What? Why would they send me notice then?  Does anyone know the mfg. date cut off line with the suspected defective baskets?

•   Chrome flaking from both shift levers  We'll order these and let you know when they come in.  You have them on the floor for sale.  Why don't you use them?  Those aren't warranty parts on the floor, that's how we work here.

•   Heated grips quit working Sept. 6th.  Very little heat even at #6 prior to this.  Ah... you changed your handle bar.  In doing this you extended the wires.  We traced the short to the splice in the handle bar.  This isn't covered by the Harley warranty.  What?!?  How did you determine the short is in the splice unless you removed the grips and wire?  We tested the leads.  So that means it could be a short in the wire or the grip element, right?  Yes.  The grips were working fine the other day... now they are not.  The bars and wiring were done by the HD Dealer in Simi Valley, CA.  If this would void the cycle's warrnaty they wouldn't have done it would they?  So because they put on the Bub 7 slip-on's does that mean any engine troubles are not covered either?  I'll have to contact Harley Davidson Warranty Dept. in regards to this.

•   Engine heat management upgrade, requires ECM upgrade, Svc Bulletin M1213A  Did not complete this yet.

•   Heated seat connected to Accessory Plug.  This is the wrong plug, TT229.  The Tech. Tip is from 2006.  2008 CUSE3 only have one plug.  You need to buy a splitter for this.   Well that's not what it says in the manual?  Well that's the way it is.
OK so by this time I'm really getting pissed with the Service Manager.  I keep going through my list.

•   Throttle response is flat just off idle.   They're all like that.  Nothing we can do.  That's just how the throttle by wire operates.   Oh really.  You don't think that just tuning it would not fix this?  Nope, that's the nature of the bike.  Wow, $40K for the high performance Screamin Eagle Ultra Glide and the regular Ultra out performs me.

•   Brakes are squealing excessively.   We installed a kit for this.  A kit?  What is the kit?  It's an application that reduces the squealing.  You mean you sprayed the pads with "Stop Squeal" right?  No, it's a different product.

I'm at a total loss here.  I've got a 7-Year warranty and this guy is nickle and diming me on known HD blunders.  Man... I think I should report this to HD Corp.

Anyone?  Any thoughts?

yes - changing the mufflers they can, if they want to, void the entire engine warranty. in fact it says in the warranty paperwork that if you change the air cleaner or any exhaust component the engine warranty is totally void.

individual dealers can warrant whatever they want - but you have to go to "that" dealer to get it covered - all other dealers will just give you a bill for the full repair and you have to go get the cash back from the dealer that installed the non epa happy parts.

in fact they can avoid your throttle repair if the exhaust or air cleaner are changed.

nasty biz really - but perfectly legal.

On the seat, there is a seperate plug for the heated seat, it's really tucked away towards the left side of the battery.  Mine was connected to the accessory plug too, I changed it myself.

Also, not to whine but my grips don't work worth a darn either, my tour pak latch (plastic) broke, and the right side saddlebag stopped locking via the remote - the wire came out of the connector, this on the way to the 105th.  Latch/lock were fixed under warranty when I got back.

I would like to get a list of everyone having problems with "Off Idle Stalling, Stumble or Flat."
The MoCo customer service reflects an attitude of;"really havn't heard much about this problem."
"Dealer should be able to correct this and of course without remapping as this is not allowed."  :nixweiss:

Ladies, what we have here is an exercise in buffoonery!

The additional plug is actually not on the seat, but under the seat.

@ IMAbadman
It is definately there, keep searching.

And: Move to another dealer. Their attitude is really wrong, it my experience this is very hard to fix. And why fight these battles, when there is choice?

Ride safely,

Most definitely, report the entire fiasco to H-D (I would put it in writing, but a phone call will work).  Then do as the other's have recommended, find another dealership and never spend a nickel in this place in the future.  This is typical of the attitude found at many Harley dealer's back in the 90's when they thought everyone should kiss their asses just to be allowed in the door.  Obviously some haven't figured out the realities of the current market yet.  We can only hope that market conditions eventually purge these jackasses (as in put them out of business).  I would make sure to try to help them in that regard, every chance I got.

Give up on the heated grips, take it Hd dude and have him install the Heat Demons you will be much happier as they work much better and you get a nice little chrome switch with little led lights and no more stupid rubber knob on the end to twist. Many have replaced factory ones several times under warranty but I think this is one item you will be better off changing and no more worries. Good luck.

Well thank you everyone for your thoughts.

Yes, a new dealer is in order.  Words can not express the amount of frustration, disappointment, and anger I feel at this moment.

The Service Manager calls me last night at 7:00 PM to tell me that, once again, they will not warranty the grips due to the new handle bar (Wild 1) installation, even though it was installed by a HD certified mechanic.  His excuse is that, “The wire harness has been extended and is no longer a HD part.”  I was nice and said, “Don’t touch my bike, I’ll be there tomorrow to pick it up.”

Wow… do you realize that this guy is trying to cancel my 7 year warranty…!?!?!  He says, “Will keep this between us… you pay for labor and we’ll take care of the parts.”  WTF!?!

Needless to say I’m on a campaign now.

•   I, nor will my fiancé, will ever purchase from them again and granted she just bought a new Fat Boy from them this past fall, a 2008 too.  Together we own 3 scooters now…
•   I will do everything in my power to alert people to their business practices and poor customer service.  Yes, I’m pissed… but no, I’m not the first one that has gotten this treatment.  I was warned… but this is the first time I’ve ever required authorized (warranty) service.  They were convenient and I gave them a shot.
•   I will do everything in my power to persuade others to avoid their business and spread the word of their practices.  YES, I will affect as much financial and reputational damage as possible.
•   I will contact the Mother Ship (HD Corp.)
•   I will meet with the owner of the business and tell him of my experience and my intentions.

To all of you…  I strongly do not recommend this dealer ship and especially their service department and the pitiful excuse of a Service Manager, Mark Melger.

May they go bankrupt.

I have installed many, many sets of 575's and never had to extend the wires :nixweiss: The dealership that extended them should be held accountable as they should not have been needed to be extended in the first place.

Taking a different tack that does nothing to solve your dealership frustrations; but there is another option for the grips.

The HD grips fail.  Often and commonly.  Several here have spent about a hundred bucks and put in a set of grip heaters called Heat Demons.  Kuryakyn sells them now but they're on eBay from Easter Peformance for about the price mentioned.

They work very well.  The manufacturer is great where support is concerned.  And they almost never fail.  If you'd like to put at least one HD annoyance behind they should be at least a consideration.

Guys I appreciate your comments and yes, I know about Heat Demons.  My point is that I should not have to buy Heat Demons and install them.  This cycle wasn't cheap.  It came with heated grips... I expected them to work and if they don't warranty to cover the replacement of them.  The cycle has a two year warranty and I purchased an additional 5 years on that.  I could have spent that cash on a hell of a lot of chrome or a few hundred sets of Heat Demons.

                                   :soapbox:

It's a crying shame I've got had to deal with such a terrible stealership like this.  There's another dealer I've been recommended to.  I'll hit them up this weekend.
