STREET LEGAL QUESTION
« on: September 10, 2008, 05:11:15 PM »

I have a general question about noise controls.  My wife and I are planning a touring trip in the US and I'm concerned about riding in states where our bikes may not be legal.  What should we do/not do and what should we look out for.  I suppose my greatest concern is that I ride a bike in one state where the noise is no problem and then ride to California and get fined or have my bike impounded or some other thing.  Any feedback/advice greatly appreciated.

So far, I have not had any problems in the following states: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and Missouri.

Now, I have heard that there are some local municipalities that have noise ordinances (Denver, Co. for example)

It shouldn't be a problem provided that you're not sitting and twisting the throttle over and over.

I rode with Thunderheader (about the loudest muffeled exhaust out there) for years, on a number of different bikes and never had any problem in other states.

And yes, I've been in Colorado Springs (they have a strict exhaust enforcement program) on a number of occassions without getting cited.  My brother told me that they're only enforcing that with the youngsters who want to see who has the loudest exhaust. :nixweiss:

I think as long as you ride reasonable, you'll be fine.

Don't know yet.  We expect to be touring for 4-6 weeks so we're weighing up the options of shipping our bikes from Aust or buying then re-selling in the States.  Whichever way, they will be louder than stock but not totally over the top.

We're in the early planning stages but just have no idea of what different state laws etc may apply.

Been all over the US with RH pipes (pretty loud). Never an issue. Ofcourse if you want to be a jerk with a cop closeby, you will get cited for something.

As others have already mentioned if you rode the bike w/o getting on the pipe (to make noise) you should be alright. I have Rinehart's on my bike (which are on the loud side) and have never had any problems w/LEO's

Been riding with a Thunderheader in CA, NV, AZ, UT, CO, OR, WA, Canada and Mexico.  No one's ever bothered me about my exhaust.  Speed yes, exhaust no. :nixweiss:

There are a very few local jurisdictions that may site you for non-stock exhaust, but it would only be a citation. More of a concern than exhaust by some jusrisdictions around the SF Bay area are the beanie (non DOT approved) helmets .

In almost all instances the US does not enforce its equipment and traffic laws the way European countries do - like Switzerland.  Unless you go to open drag pipes I don't think you will have a problem.  If you do get stopped for it....suddenly discover you don't speak English?
