need help with QUIET mufflers!
« on: September 11, 2008, 02:04:18 AM »

have an 06 ultra with true duals (Vance and Hines) feul pak high flow air filter slip on mufflers.
we have to quieten the beast down now on long rides at speed the sound is too much. I really want to go back to the factory mufflers but keep the duals since it keeps my leg cooler.
Is the any help for my condition?
Vance and Hines says " no down load for stock mufflers". So I am hung.
thanks

try vance and hines monster ovals, they sound great, deep but not too loud, and fuel pak has settings avail.

I don't think you will be happy with the true dual pipes and stock mufflers, however.  They look good, but sound worse than the stock system.  I'd like to get something between stock and the Supertrapp SE slip-ons I have too, but don't want to end up with a pile of mufflers - and a smaller pile of cash - finding some that work.  People have different ideas of what is quiet.  Some think anything less than a Thunderheader is "nice and mellow until you get on it".  I think you may have to go to some events and listen to you hear something you like and find out what it is.  I'm still listening.

lee,

When you say you have an '06 Ultra I am assuming that it is a CVO with the 103" motor.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  You also say that you have slipon mufflers but you didn't say which slipons.  Please let me know what you have on now.

I also have a '06 SE Ultra with V&H true duals, high flow air filter and a PowerCommander.  Over the past 2 years I have probably tried more sets of mufflers on my bike than anyone on this site.  You sound exactly like me and lot of others riders that would like something louder than stock but not as loud as many of the aftermarket mufflers.  I have yet to find that perfect muffler.  Here's a list of the mufflers I've tried.  I either didn't like the sound or they were too loud.  The loudest by far were the Hookers.

HD Stock CVO mufflers
Freedom Cycle true duals & mufflers
HD SE Performance mufflers Slash Cut
HD SE Performance mufflers with changeable end caps
HD Street performance mufflers
Hooker Tuned Flow mufflers
HD Stock Touring mufflers with baffles bored out
Rush slipons with 1.5" baffles
V&H Ovals
V&H Monster Ovals

Of the above, the V&H Ovals and Monster Ovals were the best sounding.  However, after long rides I still came home feeling that they were both too loud.  The Monsters have a very nice low rumble but I have found that once I get close to 3,000 rpms that they seem to get louder and actually cause an exhaust vibration.

If I had to do it over again I'm not sure I would put on the V&H true duals.  Think I'd stay with the stock header pipes.  I still have my stock head pipes but really don't want to go through the hassle of putting them back on.  I have purchased another set of stock CVO muffs which I plan to core out the cats and give them a try.  I wish I had an answer for you but the quest continues.  Sound is so subjective to the individual rider that it is difficult for someone to recommend a particular set for you.  What someone else may think sound great may sound like crap to you.  What someone else thinks is quiet may be way to loud for you.

If you end up going with V&H Ovals or the Monster Ovals I have a great PowerCommander Advanced Map for you.  It would save you the cost of a dyno tune.

Good luck and if I can be of any further assistance let me know.

What someone else thinks if quiet may be way to loud for you.

Truer words never spoken.

I am using the stock CVO mufflers and V&H true dual head pipes.  Compared to the same stock mufflers with the stock headpipes, the bike is a little louder on acceleration but not louder at idle or at a steady cruising speed.  The mufflers have 25,000 miles on them and they are a little louder the more miles they have.  Hope this helps.

I won't put the stock headpipes back on as I hate the look of the crossover.
I have not heard an aftermarket exhaust that was not too loud for me.

I don't know Dakota, I may have you beat. Let me see if I can remember:

Screaming eagle touring mufflers
Sreaming eagle performance mufflers
Bassanni, with and withour the power curve duals
Vance & Hines classic w/turndowns ( my all time favorite for pure sound, but loud )
D&D Fatcat 2 into 1
SuperTrapp super meg 2 into 1
Supertrapp supermeg slip ons
Stock mufflers cored out by fullsac
Rush slip ons  2 " baffle l( currently on the bike and very happy )

I may have forgot a pair or two I've had so many. It's a good thing I sold most of them or I would have a shiny chrome fence around the house.   ;D

I have the V&H monster ovals with the V&H headpipes.  Have ran over 6000 miles with them and have no problems with the sound.  Even my wife has no complaints.  I know V&H has downloads for the fuelpak for this setup.

V&H does not have settings for the FuelPak for a '06 SEUC with the Monsters.  At least not posted on their web site.

I've had a problem with the end caps on my Monsters discoloring.  Turned sort of a brownish/golden tint.  V&H is replacing them.  The discoloration is on the inside of the end caps.

I agree with Boatman,

While having the 110 fix done, I had V/H Header Pipes put on while using the Stock CVO Mufflers.
It is just a little louder, on take off.
Idle you can't tell any difference.
It has also taken some of the heat away.
May choose a SERT after Warranty runs out!

Hey Super,

Too bad you and I don't live closer together.  We could swap mufflers once a month.   ;D

Are you running true duals?  How would you compare the loudness of the Rush muffs with 2" baffles?

After screwing up my original stock muffs last year I've purchased another set.  Going to remove the cats and give them a try.

Currently running Bub 7 dual with crossover system. Buddies love the sound, seems a little loud for me especially under load. Pretty nice on cruise though.

Hey sawyerghost , the SERT will not screw your warranty but if you are going to upgrade go past that (or buy my old one) for something with wide band sensors. I'm running ThunderMax with auto and the difference in both performance and heat is amazing and it just keeps adjusting.

Yes on the true duals. The Rush 2" baffle mufflers are middle of the road for loudness, but maybe it's the tone I like, cause after long days they don't wear on you and make you wish for stockers. They also retain that " HD " sound that we al love. The supertrapp supermeg slip ons were a really good muffler for loudness, but the closed end cap took away the HD sound and is kinda puffy. If I was going to head out for a long road trip, the supermegs would probably go back on.

Some of you have spent some serious money on the perfect pipe. I think one problem that we're running into is that the 110 puts out more air or velocity or volume than a regular 88, 96, 103...

I only started thinking about it when I put the V & H slip ons on and it melted and blew all the insulation out of em'

I think we need to talk one of these manufaturers to do some testing on a dyno with a specially designed baffle for a 110.

When you made the comment about sound being subjective...I highly agree. However, you need to compare pipes on a 110 vs 110, not pipes on a 96 that sound great. If you put the same pipe on a 110 it will sound different.

I like that fullsac can make your stock pipe where you can swap baffles. He may well be the guy to work with on the perfect baffle...

Your thoughts?

And the longer you ride with a loud pipe, the quieter it gets ...   :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Here's another $.02 and cheaper option:  It seems that if you really want power you're going to have to have some noise.  A related issues is wind noise as most HD riders seem to use 1/2 or 3/4 helmets.  I've often read that most ear damage comes from the wind noise not exhaust noise and I have to agree.  I started using foam / disposable ear plugs as a teen because I love my music and did not want to even risk ear damage.

On my very loud '04 RG, with the plugs put in correctly, Rinehart True Duals and no baffles, I can hear the stereo just fine but nearly no wind nor exhaust.  My Titan has an unrestricted Thunderheader.  Really helps on long, highway / freeway rides.  This might not be your fix but a package of foam plugs cost only a couple of bucks and may be worth trying.  To me the plugs make riding far more relaxing and most guys I know out hear use them or have sprung for the custom ones for about fifty bucks.  They recently changed the law here in CA to allow them.  If your state does not, just pull them out if necessary (e.g. pulled over).  BTW, I'm not advocating excess noise.  I have been know to coast the last few hundred yards home late at night....
