Passing light bulb to match HID
« on: September 14, 2008, 12:58:54 AM »

I purchased a new HD HID kit for an amount that defies logic  :drink:   What I'd like to find is a passing lamp bulb(s) that somewhat matches or comes closer to, the HID bulb.  Any ideas, details on where and what to buy?  Thanks.

Give me two days and I will have a part number for you. I went to my favorite dealer that I have beeen dealing with for over 25 years. Talked to the parts manager about the HD HID. He talked me out of it. I have 3 new bulbs coming, actually they are in. I have not picked them up as of yet. He told me for under 100 bucks I will be much happier with the package he got me than the one I asked for.

I will keep you posted.

Neal, I used the PIAA Xtreme Whites and they're as close as I've seen. Never found anything to quite match perfectly yet. ;)

Are you using the H9 or H11 bulb Piaa bulb?  Low & High same bulb?

I have been running the stock HD low beam bulb 55w also in the high beam positon as the high bean is only 35w.  I had to file out the high beam mounting slot slightly so the low beam buld woud twis in, the are keyed just slightly different.

I also installed the Piaa 1100X for driving lights, mounted just above my highway pegs on the crash bar.  I will take a pic an post when I get back from Chicago next weekend.

Thanks

I'm talking about the spots. I have HID's in a 2 lamp configuration for headlamps. ;)

Well, I've run the bike a couple of times at night to check out my Harley HID Dual bulb headlamp kit $524 (+tax and labor) investment and I have to say the jury is still out on this upgrade. On the positive, it does have a wider and brighter beam on low.  However, I was expecting more punch and wow factor for an HID system.   :nixweiss:  Perhaps its because of the dual bulb headlight system on the CVO vs just a single lens HID. I'm not sure what it is about it and why I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be.   :nervous:

I was going to take it to Las Vegas on Saturday (from Seattle) for a company 3 day meeting there.  :bananarock: :drink:  I was thinking the road between Reno and LV at night would provide some real opportunity to determine whether this upgrade proves out.  And no, I wouldn't drive that entire stretch at night or even a small portion of it.  Just enough miles to get out in the desert or desolation without any cages and city lights to see the effect.  In any case, I'm flying instead, I think.

In any case, the two Aux. lamps are now so yellow in comparison to the HID Headlamp that its starting to bug me.

The Harley kit adds a HID bulb in just the one light.  For about a hundred bucks could've gone aftermarket and put HID in for both bulbs:

For $500+ for less than steller HID performance, I think I'll stick with the Halogens and Passing Lamps with PIAA's.

That's kind of what I thought with the Xciting Lighting (via Kuryakin) HID I put on.  I was expecting "Ba-bam!) and so far it hasn't been there.  The guy I ride with says it looks much brighter, and that the spots are quite yellow in comparison.  I've heard that 55 watt Xenon will give similar temperature light, but have not tried them yet.

I'm so mechanically challenged, I'm not sure how to replace the AUX bulbs in the first place :nixweiss:  I probably would have to pay the dealer again to install it.  :drink:

passing lamp bulbs are the easiest project you can do.

1 screw holding the trim ring on, then everything pops right out

Fair enough, I'll try it on my own. Thanks for the advice.  Just wonder which bulbs to replace it with that comes somewhat close to the HID light without blowing fuses or whatever  :orange:

Duane,

I immediately checked on this option upon my return to Charlotte only to find that Kuryakyn only had them in prototype version and they had some on the trailers that were at some of the rallies.  They have since decided not to manufacture this item.  Too bad, those passing lamps were perfect and very bright.
