Why do they hire dummies?
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:24:01 PM »

Nancy and I took the Mustang out today for a little exercise.

It has been many months since it had been out of the garage.

We made a little 200 mile loop through the countryside.

One of the stops we made was Tilley's HD in Salisbury NC.

Knowing Don Tilley and having ridden with him I wanted to stop and see if he was there and also see if they had any Screaming Eagles.

They had a 08 anniv. springer, and 08dyna.

I walked over to the parts counter where two guys in Tilley shirts were waiting for me.

I asked both, what pipes have you got for the 09 touring bikes?

The younger one said, you want sound or performance?

I said yes. He said what do you want, true duals, slip ons or 2 into 1?

I said true duals, he said I don't think any are available.

I said OK, how about a 2 into 1, he said, I don't think any are available.

I said, why did you ask me what I wanted and gave me a choice if it's not available.

He said, don't know, slip ons are all we can put on an 09.

Now get this, the older guy said, I don't know why the pipes for an 08 won't fit on an 09.

I said, the 09's have an all new frame.

He said REALLY hmmmmmmmmmmmm I didn't know that.

I walked away.

I walked to the service department.

I asked about what slip ons they had.

He said, we have RUSH mufflers, but you will have to use a race tuner to make it right.

I said, the race tuner or the Super SERT.

He said Super SERT what's that?

Nancy and I looked at each other and walked out.

It's no wonder things get so screwed up with help like that!

They don't pay a living wage - so there is always turnover - and who decides on a career at the parts counter for $10.00 an hour.  Get what you pay for...right?   :nixweiss:

You should call Don.  I know Don also Silver-Black, I 've read alot of your post but never realized your were from my neck of the woods.  I grew up in Cleveland just outside of Salisbury.  I remember when Don had the little shop in Statesville, he has done real well I always liked him - he is a good guy.  I am sure he would appreciate a phone call letting him know that he has some VERY uneducated people working for him.  There is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for that lack of knowledge in the parts dept maybe a salesman could be a little short on what pipes work on an 09 but parts NO WAY!  If you decide to call him tell him Tracy M said hello it has been years since I have seen him but I think he will remember me.

My brother lives in Salisbury I was back your way a year ago and went to the new dealership down in Concord (across from Bass Pro Shops) it was impressive from the road but a little smaller than I expected once I went inside.  Man...How NC has changed in the last 10 years!  We don't have Cracker Barrell's out in WA so I would appreciate you eating there for me  ;D Tracy

It seems the MoCo has been pushing via their dealer education seminars, the WALMART business model meaing hire the cheapest help you can, don't let them work enough hours to qualify as full time employees who can demand the benefits you advertise when you post the job in the paper and last but not least, don't concern yourself with any type of product training. Chip's above description is the norm in all of the dealerships I have been in over the past few months in at least one if not more areas. With some, it might be sales, others parts and accessories, and so on. With the ecomomy sluggish and sales down, my personal opinion is that H-D Inc has taken this route to advise their dealerships how to increase the bottom line. I could be wrong as this is just an observation from reading the posts on this site and my own personal experience, but you know the old saying, " if it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck " I'd be surprised to hear that Don Tilley was not aware he had these people on the payroll.

I agree with this and Spiderman's posts.  It's sad that we know more about the bikes than most of the dealers.

It's pathetic really. You know, we have a "great dealerships" thread. The last post was in July. I don't even bother to learn the names of my dealers folks anymore because the odds are very strong that they won't be there the next time I come in.

Somehow I knew you would chime in!

Please note that this was not my home dealership in Charlotte.

It was Sunday afternoon and I can only hope the guys I talked with were the backups to the backups.

But when you open the doors for business you should have knowledgeable people answering questions.

I have never seen a sign on the door of a Harley shop that says,

"Before you come in to our store, remember it's the weekend and we have a bunch of dumbasses that work cheap so the info you get may not be good."

Or,

"Before you come in to our store, remember it's the weekend and we have a bunch of dumbasses that work cheap so we are cutting weekend prices to reflect the incompetence of our staff."

So I'm going to take T Macs advice and call Don on Monday

Will followup here after I talk with him.
