Parking lot "knock down"
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:47:26 AM »

Yesterday my 08 S/E Ultra was backed into in a parking lot by a lady driving a SUV.  She knocked it down and still kept backing not realizing what she had done until someone yelled at her to stop.  The stand is broken and there are some bad scratches on the fairing and on the chrome saddlebag bars. There is a small crease in the front fork cover.  I took it to the local dealer where I had purchased it 90 days ago for an estimate and repairs.

Be careful out there, they do not see us, even while we are parked.

Mine is the 105th "Duracell" color so getting the paint will add a couple of days to the repair time.  By late Friday the dealer will have an estimate ready.  The lady has insurance and even though it happened on private property in a restaraunt parking lot, I insisted on a police report for insuance purposes.   All in all, it is not too bad, more of an irritation than real damage.

Sorry no pix.  I was not thinking about taking pix at the time.  I was trying very hard to not lose my temper with the lady as she kept saying that she just did not see my bike in the parking space as she backed into it.

It is difficult to see bikes from a SUV depepnding on the height and the location of the bike.

Not taking sides here but this can easily happen ..I almost hit one myself which would suck since I have a HD logo on the SUV.   As a result I try not to park around SUVs and pickups if I can avoid it

My husband has the big Ford/HD F250 in Bright Orange and Black, it has a crew cab and an eight foot bed.  It is not small at all.  And yet, it was backed into in a parking lot.  The driver said she did not see it.  So if you can't see this, you can't see a bike, or a child and probably should be charged with reckless driving, but .... we know that never happens.

No matter how hard it is to get a good look around us, we have to be ever vigilant in making ourselves as visable as we can, and as a cage driver too, do that second should check to make sure the way is clear before moving.  I know, I am guilty of missing somthings too.

My wife and I were just talking about this a few hours ago as she parked her bike in the parking lot at her job. I told her most bikers back in until the rear wheel is at the curb but this , in my opinion, increases the chance someone else will think the space is empty and perhaps try to back in. Told her to park square in the middle of the space.

I usually try to think about what could possibility happen when I park my bike.  As mentioned, in a regular parking space I don't back all the way to the back - don't want some maniac whipping in the parking space and find out that my bike in there after it is too late.

So, did your alarm go off when she hit the bike?

That SUX!!!   Last year I was parked in an investigator's car, (the questioning went well, thanks, they let me go... LOL) when a lady backed into us with her SUV. When we all got out I could hear her husband explaining to her what that beeping noise was she heard just before hitting us!!! :rolleyes3:

Same that always scares me - seeing how jackasses fly around parking lots...and they they hammer into a space all crooked.

Claim against their insurance.  It's their fault, yours was parked and tey were backing.  Insist on a rental Harley, they will deny, escalate they will deny, and then escalate higher and mention lawsuit.  They will give you a rental motorcycle, not car.
