A cherry that needs advice
« on: September 23, 2008, 12:15:47 AM »

Hello everyone,

I'd like to tell you a bit about myself and then get into the meat and potatoes that brought me to this site.  I'm a newbie all the way around.  I'm a captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY "Home of the 101st ABN DIV". I bought my first motorcycle an 07 Deluxe during my first deployment to Iraq.  I managed to rack up a little over 5k in between training and spending time with my family prior to leaving for my second tour.  I did the typical bike nights and was also able to make it to Daytona bike week 07 and Little Sturgis 07.

While on vacation in Disney the summer of 07 I stopped at Bruce Rossmeyer's and just fell in love with the 07 SERK.  I haven't been able to get it out of my head.  I would just ride to the local dealers in Nashville just to look at it knowing full well I couldn't afford it.

Anyway as I am on the down slope of a 15 month deployment I've been able to save enough money to put me in position of purchasing a used 07 SERK.  Unfortunately I've read all the issues with the 110" motor and it's absolutely breaking my heart as it's all I've dreamed about this whole deployment.

Then I've read a thread from yort4041 titled "what should I do".  Basically he asked with all the problems related to the 110 motors should he sell his 07 SERK for a Cross  bones or just get the extended warranty.  The responses were hands down keep the SERK.

My question is since I don't have one yet is it worth the gamble of getting one?  If I do and I purchase it from a private seller how can I get the extended warranty?  Looking forward to any advice.

"See you at Daytona Bike Week 09"

P.S. Sorry can't upload a pics from the computers over here

Here's perhaps an alternative way of considering the question you pose that might put the entire thing in a different and potentially better light.

Does the cost of the bike plus a couple grand remove the bike from acquisition?

If so, well, it's probably cutting it too close to do it anyway.

If not you really don't have an issue.  Because for a couple grand you could either:

a) Buy a set of cylinders from Axtell and touch up a top end and not have to worry about the most common of the problems anymore.

or

b) Buy the extended warranty you mentioned.  Would still have some potential inconvenience to deal with but not have any great (local) cost tied to that inconvenience.  Of course if you crap out on the road far from home all bets are off on other cost factors.  But you know and accept that risk every time you head out.

Welcome to the site from New Jersey. You are the only one who knows your money situation so only you can decide if it is worth buying.
So when you buy it enjoy your ride and thank you for what you are doing for our country.

Welcome from Aust.  Just buy the bloody thing and be done with it.  If you really can't afford, don't buy it.   But you'll always wish you did and hate yourself every time you see one.  Great machines and that extra bit of insurance you are going to buy one way or another is worth it.   And there is a wealth of knowledge on this site with people willing to help on any issue.  Go SERKs!

Welcome aboard from Minnesota! If you can afford it, get the bike you want. If you don't, you'll always second guess the decision. It took me 7 years to pull the trigger on the bike I really wanted but I waited and have no regrets.

Thanks for being on the front lines of freedom! Your service to our country is greatly appreciated!

Be safe!

You don't need us telling you what to do.  It's just nuts and bolts and can always be fixed.  You either love it or you don't and I'm guessing you do.  There is {almost} no prettier bike than the red SERK.  Get the extended warranty and wide it with pride.  Welcome to the forum from western NY!  :cherry:

Welcome.  I hesitated before i bought mine.  And now I'm glad i did it.  Consider the cost of extended warranty into the bike, it's worth every penny.  Take it for a demo ride and see how she rides.\

Welcome to the site!

I am buying my first CVO bike this week. This will be my 4th Harley and throw a Victory  and Kawi in there as well. Just could never justify the extra expense of the CVO. Problem is, mentally, I tried to turn each one into a CVO - meaning I spent a chitload of $$ on them. I submit that if I had just spent the $$ upfront and gotten the CVO, I'd be much better off financially. I hang out quite a bit at a local chop shop that specializes in upgrading stock bikes. Most guys that bring their stock baggers in there spend $8-12k fixing them up. Wheels, chrome, motor improvements, paint, etc. So if you spend $20k on a stock and add the eventual "trickle" of $10k, you are not far off from the $33-34k for the new one (with engine mods). That's my justification.

Hope this helps, and YOU ROCK dude. Our guys in the armed forces are the KEY to the success of democracy and our way of life. Without your sacrifice, none of us would even have this kind of decision to make.
