Compatability issues with the 08 SE Heavy Breather to 09 SERG
« on: September 27, 2008, 11:23:31 PM »

Everybody wants more HP/TQ.

Of the 3 Race Tuners I have spoke with, all seem to agree that the Heavy Breather produces the best numbers. Something about laminar flow and the lack of turbulence created by the flow through created in a 360 deg filter... not sure bout all that but..... what the hell, I got one....

Installed it, to the exacting standards of the MOCO directions..... and rode it.... within a mile it was blowing oil all over hell and back..... when I stooped and pulled the dip stick there was a pressure release that sounded like a relief valve going off. Won't get into the nitti-gritty bout where it came out from, that's a whole nother horror story.

Took it home and tore apart that new (part # 29253-08, Fits '08-later Touring models, page 507) and discovered that the breather bolts (screws, Part A , Instruction  J04479) that you were instructed to reuse, did not take into account that the 09 model had differant breather bolts, that would completely bock the crank housing pressure out the air box, when reused to fit the 08 Heavy Breather.

Went to the dealer and had to buy new 08 breather bolts to make the $299.95 08 Heavy Breather functional on my new 09 SERG.

So.... be aware that the breather bolts on the 09s are differant than the breather bolts on the 08s and prior. This may impact any changes you might make to your air box.

Now for the real problem:

Who's gonna clean up this damn oil mess all over my new SERG ????

Hell,.......me I guess....Wait.... maybe the wife............naaa.........yea the kids......... ah crap !!   :'(

Sparky,

Whoever changed out your stock air box was more qualified than me, as they must have ignored the HD install directions to reuse the stock breather bolts. Obviously, they replaced the 09 stock breather bolts with the correct ones. Too bad the right breather bolts did not come with my heavy breather kit. Glad yours worked out; that gives me the go-ahead with my air box change out. I have purchased the correct ones for the heavy breather and I will install asap.
Thanks

I had the dealer install a Heavy Breather while he was tuning.  It helped a ton.  Highly recommended.  He had to change the bolts.  He didn't think twice about it.  He had the right ones in his toolbox and installed them.  He said he sees issues like this all of the time with moco docs.

For anyone wanting to install the Heavy Breather, it is really a no brainer. You will need to purchase the right breather bolts Part # 29465-99. Use these breather bolts instead of the 09 breather bolts currently on your 09 SERG, and you will be good to go. If you can operate a ratchet wrench you can do this. You will need some Torq sockets and hex wrenches as well. Sears.....Craftsman....... Tools...... Oh Yea BABY!!!
Save the $75 hourly rate for the install.

Well those "dealer recommended" breather bolts were too short. I guess they fit somum, but not the heavy breather backplate that I got with my kit. The parts guy and the Service Manager said that was the only length they had...Rain on this nonsense I will make my own, tired of dinkin with em. If you find your self in the same situation PM me and I will help.

I will center drill (2) 3/8" x 1 1/2" cap screws their entire length and go that route. Should work, but I'm from the "Show me state". If that doesn't cure the problem I will try something else.

Didn't realize that the Custom part of CVO, meant that you would have to manufacture your own parts.

Uh Oh!!!  I just bought the breather bolts you mentioned....still waiting on the Heavy Breather.  What exactly was the problem with thew original breather bolts?  Looking now in hindsight the breather bolts in the post are for 02-07 twin cam.   Looking in the catalog for the heavy breather for 08 models and later

"The back plate features integral breathers and sealed breather bolt plug. Kit includes a water-repellent rain sock and all mounting hardware."

that tells me you dont need anything??????  But then again the breather is probably with my friggin tour pack.......

Sorry, SBLAIR

The bolts I listed are too short. If you use them only 2-3 threads will engage into the heads, and that spells stripped out threads. So, I went back to the local dealer who told me that these are what you need. And, after a quite lengthy discussion they admitted "Yea you're right, but we don't have longer breather bolts". They got all confused and indignant, so I left. What you need for the "Heavy Breather I have" to retro on the 09 SERG "I own" is (2) 3/8 x 1 1/2" Hex head bolts with a 1/8" hole drilled through the center of them the length of the bolt.

If you can't find a solution, send me your ship to address and I will have a machine shop drill em for you. Sorry for this inconvenience. I installed mine with the fab'd bolt this eve. and all is well.
I will be proud to cover yours, but no more than yours.
