Vented Lowers--Anyone With Experience Adding Vents?
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:37:30 AM »

Put the lowers back on the Classic SERG before the Maggie Valley departure.  They were nice to have on the cool mornings up there too.  The trip back and forth on the highway reminded me how warm it gets behind them though.  Mid 80s or more the right foot is on the peg most of the time not just for knee position.  It gets warm there.  Only saw very high 80s for a couple of hours.  Don't even want to think about what it would be like on hundred degree days.  There's a reason the lowers were off all summer.

The vented lowers on the 05 SEEG allow those lowers to be four season parts.  Has anyone added any of the several aftermarket vent kits to Road Glide lowers?  If so how well have they worked and what deviciencies in either use or installation have been experienced?

FWIW my '00 had them. Forget the brand but twas a major name installed by the manufacturer at Myrtle Beach. When opened they contacted the front fender under large compression of the front end. A bad thing. Scratch, not dent.

Thanks Jim.  Will pay close attention to travel distance and location.

Have looked at some this morning.  Found prices of $40 to $200 for different products.  The cheapies were just injection molded plastic though.  Can't see them holding up on the highway for extended periods.

Discounting the lack of clearance with the fender for a moment; did they pass enough air to make a noticable difference to either your legs or the engine?

Not much help Don. They were installed by the prior owner and I never used them on a day warm enough to risk opening them. They were black metal w/ a "T" push / pull handle on the backside. Sorry.

MikeeeT (Hogasm's uncle) has them on his RoadGlide and had them put on at Myrtle Beach Bike Week.
I believe a company called Hoppe's is what he has and he said they worked great.  These are what ElectraglideGoodies repackages and sells.  Looked good from what I saw at MV..

Thanks Bob.  The Hoppe product is the one I'm most interested in so this is good to read.  I didn't notice them on Uncle's bike but didn't really start thinking about it hard until on the way home.  May keep an eye out on eBay for a (hopefully) slightly dinged up set of Road Glide lowers to experiment with rather than cutting the painted originals.  If those worked well could just get them painted and save the stockers.

I remember a thread talking about this same problem. That solution was to make sure the lowers are installed ABSOLUTELY as far outboard as possible, even 1/2 can make a difference.

TwoLane,
The Hoppe"s are great. Just be sure you mount them ( lowers ) as far out as possible.
I've had the for 3 years and no problems.
I enjoyed meeting you in MV.

Thanks Mike.  Have looked at the lower's mounting and will double check they're as far outboard as they can be.  Pivot at the top of course because the upper fairing supports aren't going anyplace.  But might gain more swing at the bottom.  Thanks for the heads up on experience with the Hoppe vents.  Of those I'd found online they looked to be the most promising.  Road Glide might get a little chore it didn't know was coming...

Hoppes makes them for any lowers, aftermarket. I should be able to get pictures of mine after the BSR finds the patch cord for the camera to the computer.

Hoppe's website only has photos with installation on Electra Glide lowers.  So with any luch Mikeytee's patch cord will come home and he'll show us something to lust after.

Mikey said he needed a patch cord brought home to be able to use his camera again.  If he can use his camera again he might take some pictures for us.  If we have pictures of the installed parts we might have something to lust after.  If we have something to lust after Hoppe might get our money.

Don, if you haven't already looked at Eglidegoodies website, they have some good pictures and install instructions.  Bob
